"You guys, go home. I'll be fine here with Lark. We have school tomorrow," I said for about the twentieth time.
"We're not leaving," Archie said.
"We want to make sure you're ok," Jughead said.
Jeez, it was like they rehearsed it. "Just let Lark drive you home. Please," I said.
"I don't mind," Lark said.
"We're not leaving," the boys said at the same time.
"You guys are acting like twins," Lark said.
We all laughed. When we were all sobered up, Dr. Melendez came back with my x-ray results. "So, the good news is that your ankle is not broken. However, it is sprained pretty badly, so you will have to be on crutches and have a brace for at least a week, as well as wear the brace for a few weeks or so after that. On your way out, make an appointment for a week from now so me or one of my colleagues can make sure it's ok for you to discontinue use of the crutches and determine how long you will have to wear the brace."
"Thank you so much," I said.
"My pleasure."
A nurse brought me an ankle brace and crutches, and Lark made my appointment on the way out. "Now, I have to get back to work after I get you kids home, so let's be snappy. Archie, where do you live?" Lark asked.
"I'll give you directions on the way," Archie said.
I hobbled out on my crutches, trying to keep up with Lark and Archie. Jughead was walking next to me, and I felt kinda bad for making him walk this slow. "Jug, go ahead. I'll be at the car in a second," I said.
"No, it's fine. I don't mind staying with you," he said.
I smiled. I wanted to reach out and grab his hand, but I couldn't due to the crutches I had tucked under my arms. And even if it wasn't meant that way, it was the most romantic thing I had ever heard.
When I finally made it to the car, I got in the front seat and we went toward Archie's house. After we dropped him off, Lark wanted to know where to drop Jughead off. "Where do you live, Jug?" she asked.
"Uh, just drop me at the drive-in. I'll walk from there," he said.
"It's ok, we'll take you to your house. Where is it?"
"Lark, just do what he asked," I said.
"No, I'll take him to his house. Where is it?" she asked.
"Lark, just stop and drop him off at the drive-in!" I yelled.
Lark could tell I was pissed, so she just did what I said and pulled up to the drive-in. We dropped him off then headed home in silence. My sister knew me well enough to know that I was tired and grumpy and I just wanted to go home and go to bed.
As soon as we got home, I climbed in bed, propped my leg up, and went to sleep, not bothering to change. Today had been a long day, and sleeping in a dress was the least of my worries.
When my alarm went off the next morning, I had to make extra sure I got out of bed quickly so I could change. I quickly changed into my high waist Alice in Wonderland jeans, my "Lost as Alice, Mad as the Hatter" shirt, and my leather jacket. I slipped on my sandals that I never wear (I hate open-toed shoes, but because of the brace I couldn't wear my Converse or combat boots), grabbed my backpack, and started hobbling toward school.
"What are you doing?" I heard someone say as I passed the drive-in.
"What does it look like I'm doing, Jug? I'm going to school. It's not like I can just hop on my motorcycle and ride there," I said.
