Chapter 9

“...And then, he just left. Isn’t that weird? Anyway, there was nothing in the room, it was completely empty” I informed Agent Daniels the next morning in his office.

“Hmmm” Agent Daniels nodded thoughtfully as he leant against the desk with his arms folded. “It must have been a false lead then. Don’t worry, I’ll look into it” he turned to Andy who was also leaning against the desk with his arms folded beside him. “Find out more information on this, will you Andy.”

Andy nodded his head in reply and turned to me. “Do you have any idea who the guy was?” he asked.

I shook my head. “No, not really. Although he did seem familiar, but no, I didn’t recognise him” I shrugged.

“Okay” Andy sighed, “I’ll go find out more about this diamond” and with that he left with a nod to Daniels.

I turned to Agent Daniels who had now returned to his seat behind his desk and clasped his hands together. “Well, you did the best you could Patricia”

“But I have never failed a task. Never” I retorted.

“You didn’t exactly fail”

“It feels like it though” I mumbled. I had always managed to come back with something whenever I was on a mission and for me to come back with nothing felt horrible. I felt like a failure and it was dampening my mood. Even Andy had tried to cheer me up by taking me out to my favourite club but I didn’t feel as if I had deserved it. My mum also tried to cheer me up, and she was usually good at it, but nothing helped. I had never felt like this before, this feeling of failure.

“Anyway” I sighed, trying to change the subject, “What about this camping trip? Is there some mission or something to do while I’m there?” I couldn’t think of any other reasonable explanation as to why Daniels would send us off camping. That had to be the reason.

“No, it’s just for fun” he shrugged “I thought you deserved a break”. So that was the reason. Really.

“By going camping?” I asked incredulously, still not letting this little bit of information sink in. I mean if you wanted to give someone a break then send them off to a spa resort or somewhere abroad; not camping.

“Yes. It should be fun and you will get to go with all your classmates so you wouldn’t be going alone” I would have rather gone alone, I thought to myself.  “I also got a good discount” he said almost inaudibly, that I thought it was my imagination.

“What was that?” I asked, making sure that I heard correctly.

“Hmmm... oh nothing, nothing” he coughed and looked down at his desk, pretending to be busy with his work. I glared at him but he didn’t see since he was preoccupied elsewhere. I just rolled my eyes at him before leaving the room, getting ready for the day ahead.

Today was the day of the seniors prank day and all over the school the seniors had been pulling pranks. Already they had roped all the school doors this morning, so everyone got stuck on their way to classes and they also sent three pigs loose around the school. The seniors had thought it would be funny to label the pigs 1, 2 and 4. So the teachers had been running around like crazy, trying to catch the pigs and trying to find this missing pig number three- when it didn’t even exist. That was pretty hilarious to watch, seeing them all going completely insane, looking for this missing pig.  It was good as we missed our morning classes and it was about two hours later when they had given up on finding this non-existent pig.
