Chapter 2
The museum was pretty big. It was a popular attraction here in this city but ever since the break in it has been a bit quiet- that made my mission much easier.
I entered through the revolving doors of the museum to see a smartly dressed man of a stocky build with a big smile on his face waiting by the entrance. His head shiny with wisps of grey hair around his head. According to my research, he was the museum curator.
I myself was wearing a black blazer with a white shirt which looked appropriate for someone who looked like they were about to work in a museum. I also had my glasses on that Missy had made me, it definitely completed the look.
The first thing to see as soon as you enter the museum was the beautiful water fountain that lay in the middle of the vast main hall. At the far end of the hall was the reception desk, which sat a young lady sitting behind the desk filing her nails as if she didn’t have a care in the world. I suppose there wasn’t much to do in the museum seeing as how quiet the museum had been lately. The museum curator didn’t seem to take any notice of her as I approached him with a smile.
“Hello, I’m Sarah, I’ve been assign...er asked to do a job here, seeing as you are short staffed” I said the last part quickly, saving myself. Sarah was the name I would use whenever I would go on a mission. I never used my real name; it was just so that no one could track me down after I left. I couldn’t believe I almost blew my cover; I hardly ever made silly mistakes like that. I took a deep breath to stay focused and keep my head in the game. I couldn’t afford to make any more mistakes otherwise it could mean game over.
He didn’t seem to notice my little slip up and replied “Oh yes, we have been expecting you. I am Alastair by the way” he said with a gruff voice, and he took out his hand to shake which I politely took. “Your CV was really impressive. Your passion and enthusiasm for History was what made you shine” he smiled as if he was really proud of me.
I feigned a smile. “Thank you. I really do love History and I cannot wait to start working here”. That couldn’t be any farther than the truth. Andy is usually in charge of making sure I get into places, so he must have added in that I had a real passion for History. He must have had a right laugh writing that down as he knows how much I dislike History.
“Follow me and I’ll show you to the staff room”
“It seems very quiet here today” I said, trying to make conversation as we made our way to the staff room.
He sighed “Yes, unfortunately the break in has affected this museum greatly. Some staff members have left as they feel that their lives are in danger if they stay here any longer. Other members of staff have still decided to stay on either because they have been loyal to the museum or can’t find a job elsewhere”
Although I did feel sorry for him, this made for a great opportunity to get into the museum without people becoming too suspicious of my motives also if I were to ask any member of staff about the break in it would seem that I was merely curious.
As we entered the staff room, Alistair introduced me to Brian, who had worked here for several years. There were other members of staff in the room but they didn’t seem to notice my arrival as they were too busy concentrating on their own conversations or reading a magazine.
