Numbers

After school I walked over to my locker and noticed a girl struggling to get hers open. As I got closer I saw that it was actually YuQi that was struggling with the locker. As I approached her she seemed to not notice me. I grabbed the paper from her hand that had her lockers combination and quickly began to put in the numbers. Right before I lifted the latch to unlock it I punched the small metal door and out popped the door. As soon as the door was open YuQi turned to thank me but before she could I turned and began heading to my locker. At my locker I put away all my textbooks and brought home only a sketchbook and my watercolors. I closed metal door of my locker and was about to head out when someone stepped in front of my path. Looking up I was met with YuQi's bright eyes and adorable smile. "Thank you for helping me get my locker open (Y/N)! That was so cool! I didn't know you had to do that before lifting the latch." she exclaimed before I could manage to get my thoughts together. When I finally thought of a response all that came out was "Yeah, those lockers are pretty stupid, just hit them a few times and they'll finally get the message to open up." I had not meant to say exactly that, but I guess my mouth had other plans. I began to head to the parking lot so I can leave but YuQi decided to come with me. I didn't mind, I just thought she would've had to catch the bus.

"Where are we going?" she asked. "To my car" I responded. She said nothing until we finally reached my car. As I unlocked the door and threw my bag towards the back I noticed she had climbed into the passenger seat. "What are you doing?" I asked, accidentally coming off more rude than I had hoped for. "Oh... I'm sorry! I thought I had asked out loud for a ride. Guess I practiced too much in my head and thought I had actually asked" she stammered as she grew hot and red. "No, it's okay. I'll give you a ride."

As we pulled out of the parking lot I couldn't get my mind off something. Why did she say she was practicing to ask me for a ride? Was she just nervous because she was new? Or maybe... does she like me?!?!?!? No, she wouldn't like me right? RIGHT? Do I like her?

To try and get my mind off these racing questions I decided to ask where she lived, since I really didn't know where I was taking her. "Oh, I live on 382 Maple Road" she answered. Interesting, so her locker is near mine... and so is her house. As we continued driving she enthusiastically sang to all the songs the speakers from my car radio blasted out. As we were half way through the drive I turned the music down a little bit and asked "So you don't take the bus?" "No, I've never taken the bus before and I'm not the most sure today is the day I want to start." "Where did you move here from. I don't mean to be rude but I was just wondering since all the transfers we usually get are kids that got sent here from detention centers that don't have room for the anymore. Other than that all the students here were born in this town so this is the only school we can come to unless somehow our families gather up enough money to buy a house in the city or manage to get a rare transfer to the city." As soon as I began blabbing I just wanted it to be over. Wow I love embarrassing myself. Gladly, she didn't seem to be bothered by my blabbing... or maybe I was just imagining things again. "Oh, I actually moved here because my parents didn't want me around anymore. They just kinda bought a house out here and packed up my stuff one day. They told me we were going on vacation but ended up driving out here and dropping me off at the front door of my new house with nothing but the key and my bag." She sadly explained as she looked out the window. I couldn't help but feel bad. "I wondered what it was. I mean, you don't seem like the type of girl that would be needed to be in a detention center." I said, hoping it maybe offered some type of comfort or change of subject but I knew it didn't. I realized I didn't exactly have anything that could offer some comfort so instead I handed her my phone with my Spotify open so she could choose which songs she wanted to listen to. She seemed to like music so I could at least offer her that.

When we finally pulled into the driveway of her house I turned to her and accidentally blurted "Well you are finally home. If you need anything don't be afraid to call me. I live just ten minutes down the road so I can come over if you need." IMMEDIATE REGRET. I swear I wanted to crawl into a ball and disappear right then and there. Surprisingly she just turned and smiled. "I'm fine for tonight. I just really need to unpack and "Fully move in"." I could hear the sadness behind her statement but she still kept a big bright smile on her face. "I just realized I don't have your number" she said, as if surprised by the fact even though we only met earlier this day. "Oh, I guess your right" I dumbly responded. I quickly pulled out my phone and YuQi put in her number. I sent a Hi~ to her number so she could save my contact.  Right before I left I asked "Are you going to need a ride tomorrow?" Surprised but happy she responded a cheerful yes. "But, I know its a bother to ask but could you please also take me to school?" "Too scared to ride the bus still?" I teased. "Yes she embarrassedly admitted. Ahhh she is so cute. "Okay, I'll be here at 8 am okay?" She gladly confirmed that the time for the morning was okay and with that I began to drive home.  As I drove away all I could see was a cute girl in my rearview mirror waving manically at me until she disappeared from view.
