"What are they doing over there?" I wondered, catching sight of a group of employees clearing tables out of a large, stage-like area. "I don't know. I wonder why they're moving the tables," Niall replied. A male employee put up a sign that read, "Dancing Class! 6:30 TODAY! Grab a partner and come on up!" Lauren glanced at her phone, "It's 6:15 right now." "We should do the class!" I squealed excitedly, ignoring the fact I couldn't dance at all. "You guys would really take a dance class with us?" Harry questioned hopefully. Lauren and I erupted into giggles. "NO!" I laughed. "She meant with me," Lauren added, shooting them down. "Oh," Niall sighed. "You guys should still do it," Lauren encouraged, pointing at them both. "Two men taking a dance class together?" Niall inquired, sending a skeptical stare Lauren's way. "Until then... Let's play 'order some dessert'," I hesitated, not even wanting to begin with that discussion.
We ordered dessert and it came around. "Ladies and gentlemen, girls and boys, we'd like for you all to grab a partner and come on up for our free Tuesday dance class!" a tall, skinny brunette woman smiled into her microphone. I grabbed Lauren and we rushed up together. Niall and Harry weren't as... Excited as we were. They actually looked quite uncomfortable as two old women came up and joined them. Our teacher was recruiting people throughout the restaurant for the class. Once she decided that we had enough people, she began, "Hello ladies and gentlemen, my name is Kelly and I'll be your dance instructor for this class! We are going to have a wonderful time! My partner Phillip and I are going to teach you how to do this dance." Kelly and Phillip joined hands and walked forward and back, forward and back. After four times, they got closer and did a more complicated forward, back, front, forward, back, front. Then they took the position they were in for that move and swayed back and forth. They spun in a circle, Phillip dipped Kelly and the dance was done. The crowd applauded. The dance looked quite complicated and I of all people was not coordinated. Lauren was a small bit more coordinated than me, but not by much. I could see this dance ending very, very badly for the both of us. "We are going to begin with the two partners in a slow dance position or, as we'll call it, first position. The girls' hands here and the boys' hands here," Kelly announced, demonstrating first position. Lauren put her hands on my neck and I put my hand on her hips. That was a tad bit uncomfortable. I glanced over at Niall and he returned it, looking scared. I could tell that he was completely uncomfortable. "Now, one of you step back and the other step forward like so," Kelly continued, demonstrating the back and forth step. "Return to first position," Kelly smiled, repeating the move. Everyone stepped back to the slow dance position. "Now switch. So whoever stepped forward, step back and whoever stepped back step forward. Now make sure you're using the same legs for the step. For example, if I step back with my right leg, Phillip steps forward with his right leg. Now repeat that cycle," Kelly ordered. The crowd of dancers stepped back and forth and back and forth in a completely unorganized shuffle of jerky movements. We must've practiced that step a whopping twenty times. The entire time, Lauren and I kept exchanging glances with Harry and Niall. They were silently begging us to dance with them and help them escape from their old lady partners. "Lauren, I feel bad. I think we should dance with them," I quietly stated. I waited for her usual smart remark. "Me too," she agreed, watching our feet. No smart remark? Whoa. Her and I backed away from each other and stood by the boys until Kelly turned our way. Dang it! It was nice to have a small break from humiliating myself. Kelly gave Lauren and I a questioning look until we finally tapped Niall and Harry's partners on the shoulder, "May I?" The women backed off and allowed us to step in. "Great job everybody!" Kelly praised, "Now we're gonna add a step. Take your partner like this. We'll call this second position. The woman's left hand should be resting on the man's shoulder and the gentleman should have his left hand resting on the woman's waist area but don't let those hands wander South. We don't want any groping! Your right hands should be brought to the side as so." She held Phillip's right hand out to the side. Uh oh.
