Early dawn light drifted through the open window and cast over Sam's eyes, waking him in the comfort of the motel bed. He glanced to his left to see Gabriel sprawled out on the bed, snoring, his left arm and leg laid on Sam. Sam smiled in amusement and slipped out from under the covers carefully as to not wake him, standing up on the bed and tip toeing over the archangel's limbs before stepping down to the floor. All the while, Gabriel snored on with no sign of disturbance. With no one around to see, Sam gave him a loving smile before turning to the small kitchen section of the room, swinging the fridge open, peering in to see if perhaps this motel stocked the fridges as some did.
That's when he felt the chilling sensation of a pistol barrel press against his back.
Sam froze, dread flooding every inch of his chest. He tried to glimpse behind at his attacker, but when he moved his head she spoke. "Move and you're dead," She warned, a subtle click coming from the gun as she tightened her grip slightly on the trigger.
"I have a feeling I'm going to die either way." Sam responded. From his blurry peripheral, he could see her skin was not clear. It was, in fact, covered with dark tattoos as though they were her veins. Either this was a burglar who liked to get tattoos frequently or a Djinn. Knowing him, he guess it was the latter.
"Shut up," The Djinn hissed, "I found my sister mutilated in that damn barn. The only way I recognized her was by her bracelet. A bracelet." Pain made her voice waver, and for a moment Sam felt sympathy for her. Then again, she was pointing a gun at his back.
"Listen, I'm sorry, I-" Sam gasped as there was a click, the sound of a bullet shooting through a silencer, just a whip of air, a bullet burying itself in the bottom of the fridge, and then pain exploding from his back. The Djinn dropped her gun and grabbed Sam by the neck, and although he couldn't see or feel it, he knew poison was flooding his veins, up to his brain as his vision turned blurry and down to his heart, thudding painfully against his ribs as his instincts panicked. His legs shook, and once the Djinn let go, he fell, chin slamming on the fridge shelf and body hitting the ground. It was impossible to make out her face, but he sure it was cold with bloodshot eyes as salty tears dripped on his body.
"That's all I wanted. An apology, and a life to pay for hers." With that, the Djinn walked out the door, closing it quietly.
Sam strained his eyes to look down at the ground, seeing his own blood stain the white tiles. "G...Gabe..." Sam tried to call for his partner but his voice was barely that of a raspy whisper. His snoring continued and Sam rolled his eyes. "Gabe!" Even his shout would be drowned out by the mere buzzing of a fly. He assumed he would be freaking out if he could, but every muscle felt weighed down by tons of cement, gravity pulling down on his limbs and draining the blood from his veins. He rolled his head to one side. There, on the ground, was the Djinn's gun, just an a foot away from his own foot. If he could shoot it, then that would wake up Gabriel for sure. Groaning, Sam stretched his leg, letting out grunts of pain as the bullet in his back sent pains throughout him. He moved down slowly, vision swirling and giving Sam a pounding headache. Finally, his toe touched metal, and he slipped it through the finger guard and bent his leg upwards against his thigh so the gun reached his hand. He grabbed it and shot it once into the wall, forgetting it had a silencer. Mustering what strength he had left, he raised his hand, aiming it at Gabriel's sleeping form, and fired the gun.
Gabriel jumped up with a start, looking down at the hole in his side with bewilderment. "What the hell!? Sam?" At the sound of his voice, Sam let out a large breath and let his arm fall back down, gun clattering on the tiles. Blood was still spreading out from him, pain aching through him, increasing every passing second. Gabriel's face appeared in Sam's failing vision, horror-struck. The archangel kneeled down at Sam's side, pressing his hands on the wound. Grace shined between his fingers and the pain slowly eased away from Sam, the world coming back into sharper focus, though his skin still looked pale from the close scrape with death. Gabriel took Sam's hand who gripped it tightly in return and pulled him up, but Sam stumbled slightly and almost knocked over the short angel as he fell forward, Gabriel wrapping his arms around him to stop him from falling back down. Just the touch made Sam feel invincible on the inside. In contrast, he was still physically weak. One doesn't recover easily from one Djinn poisoning, let alone two and a bullet wound within hours of each other. So Gabriel let Sam lean on his shoulder, slouching down due to how short Gabriel was compared to him, which would have knocked over any ordinary human, but the archangel carried Sam to his bed with little trouble, laying him down so his back was propped up against the wall, softened by pillows.
