"Knock knock! Guess who's here!" I said as I walked to Sokka's house. We were going out to lunch.
The door was open, so I just walked in as I usually do. Sokka wasn't in the living room, so I walked to his bedroom. He was sitting on his bed with a note in his hand staring at the ground.
"You ready for our lunch date?" I joked.
No answer.
"Hey Snoozles. I asked you a question." I don't know whether I was mad or just worried.
"Go away," he cried with despair.
I was slightly hurt, but not hurt enough to leave.
"What's wrong with you, Sokka?" I was legitimately concerned. "You never act like this."
"Suki dumped me," Sokka whispered.
I had to put on a sad face for the sake of my friend, but on the inside, I was overjoyed! I never liked how Suki treated Sokka. Not to mention that I had the biggest crush on him.
"Aw, I'm sorry, Sokka. Can I ask why?" I questioned.
"She said that she found someone else. Apparently, I wasn't good enough for her," Sokka said, his voice cracking.
I was appalled. Why would she say that to someone so great?
"That's not true Sokka!" I said.
"Yes it is. I've always been an idiot. I've never taken anything or anyone seriously and it caused me to lose the love of my life..." Sokka muttered. "Nothing about me makes anyone want to stay with me."
I couldn't believe this. He was telling complete lies!
"Sokka, you didn't deserve how Suki treated you. She always treated you like a maid. And don't say that! You make everyone laugh! You are like my other half and we do everything together and you are the one that gets me out of bed in the morning and makes me feel normal and I love you not really in a friendly way and I never want to see you like this again and you deserve to be treated right and... Yeah." I took in a deep breath. I could feel my cheeks becoming bright red and I could feel my heartbeat become faster. But I hate seeing him like this so I told him.
Sokka turned to me. "Is that all true?" he asked.
I gave him a friendly punch. "When do I ever lie?" I said with an nervous chuckle.
There was a long pause. I was getting more and more nervous. Did I just ruin our great friendship? Did I just lose my best friend? Did I ruin everything?!
"I'm... just gonna go now..." I said with tears in my eyes. As I opened the door to leave, he spoke.
"Wait. don't go just yet," he mumbled. "I need a turn to rant, right?"
"I guess it's only fair," I agreed.
He started with a deep breath.
"I still love Suki." My heart broke, but I continued to listen. "But I've always admired you, Toph. You're so good at everything. You're an amazing earthbender, the best earthbender. You're so strong and you never show fear. You're also very smart. And pretty." I blushed. "But my favorite thing about you is the fact that I can spend time with such an amazing person like you. I've grown to love you in more of a friendly way too and--"
I cut Sokka off with a huge hug. He was very shocked at first, because I never hug anyone, but he settled into it. I breathed in his scent and rested my head on his chest since I was much shorter than him
"I would never hurt you," I said. "Unless I'm gonna give you one of those loving punches," I laughed. So did he and I could hear his deep laugh in his chest. He pulled back from the hug and I felt him stare down at me.
"I wouldn't hurt you either."
I could feel his heartbeat get faster and faster and faster. That's when it happened.
He kissed me.
Our lips moved in sync. It's like they were made for each other. His lips were soft. It wasn't rough, it wasn't greedy, it was passionate. We were two confused young adults kissing each other and it felt so right. I wanted to go for longer but he pulled away.
"You wanna go for lunch now?" he grinned.
"Are you asking me on a date, Sokka?"
"Maybe I am, Mrs. Beifong."
He took my hand and intertwined our fingers. We walked down the street to our favorite meat place. I didn't know what our relationship was, but I loved it.
