Five days later, Alex, Marissa and I stood in my apartment at seven in the morning, waiting for Michael to pick us up. It was seven and a half hours each way, and I wanted to make it back tonight. I wanted to be able to take Sadie for dinner, or do something fun with her. Michael was screwing up all of my plans. Marissa and Alex slumped sleepily on the couch while I paced back and forth, dialing Michael's number over and over again, hoping to wake him up. For all I knew, he had stayed at Megan's last night and was ignoring my calls so that she didn't get angry.
"Just call Calum to wake him up, Ronnie." Ris moaned. I sighed; that was the last thing I wanted to do. Calum had made it obvious that he was pissed that Michael was taking me to get my sister. He told Luke he at least wished I would've invited him, but he really thinks I should have just turned Michael down and asked him.
"Alex, can't you call Luke and ask? Calum is all pissy with me." I whined. Alex sighed, picking up her phone. Luke wouldn't get mad at her for calling, he was too enamored with her.
She refused to admit that they were dating, or that she and Luke even liked each other, but you could see it. When he called, her eyes lit up. When she wrapped her arm around his waist or sat on his lap, a smile took over his entire face.
"Luke said Michael fell asleep on the couch and his phone died. Apparently he just has to shower and then he'll be here." Alex yawned, and I sighed. It was already almost six, and I'd told Sadie what time to be ready for. I didn't want her to spend too much time waiting. I didn't want to disappoint her. I nodded and sat down on the couch between my friends. Marissa leaned her head on my shoulder, and before I could stop myself I fell asleep again.
I woke up to my phone ringing and pounding on the door. I shot up, answering my phone immediately.
"Michael?" I squeaked. I heard him grunt on the other side of the phone.
"Hi, Veronica. I'm standing outside your door holding a tray of coffee and a bag of breakfast sandwiches. Please open the door before my arms fall off." I grinned and hung up without responding, rushing over to my door. He practically stumbled in, a grey beanie covering his hair, which he'd coloured pink since I'd seen him two days before. I grinned; I'd told him once that pink was my favourite colour, but I forced myself to believe that wasn't why he chose it.
Alex and Marissa turned towards us groggily, almost as if the smell of food and coffee had woken them up.
"So girls, how about we get this show on the road?" He asked, holding the coffee tray towards them. They took the drinks with their names on them and smiled. He handed mine to me and grinned. "I know you hate the taste of coffee, so I got you a tea. You're so weird, working in a coffee shop even though you hate caffeinated drinks." I rolled my eyes, trying to hold back my grin. I liked that he remembered these little things. He'd easily become one of my closest friends.
"I don't hate caffeinated drinks, Michael. I hate coffee. Some teas are caffeinated. Pop has caffeine in it. Energy drinks are-" He cupped his hand over my mouth to shut me up, making me laugh.
"Okay, Veronica. I get it. Now let's get going, smart ass. We've got a little girl waiting for you." I grinned, and the four of us made our way out to his truck.
Less than half an hour after we'd started driving, Marissa and Alex had fallen back asleep, leaving me alone with Michael. He'd put music on and was tapping along to the beat on his steering wheel, a smile on his face. I couldn't help but stare at him. He seemed so at ease, driving down interstate, singing along to a Green Day song. The silence between us was comfortable, because we were comfortable with each other. I mean, I felt sort of awkward after our conversation at Alex's, but it was fading. I had to be okay with the fact that we were just friends. I had a good boyfriend who liked me, and Michael was my friend. He might even be one of my best friends. I clicked with him like I clicked with Alex and Ris. Michael glanced over at me and grinned.
