Thanks to blue0eevee for the request! I had lots and lots of ideas for this story and it was hard to narrow it down to the right path to take. There are some leftover ideas that I'm hanging onto for sure!
I do not own these characters, I just write them as a way to love and care for them.
This story gets the Steve Rogers LANGUAGE WARNING.
TAKEN UNDER THE WING
"How's the new recruit fitting in?" Steve asked as he stepped next to Natasha where she stood like a statue in black jeans. His voice was colored with his normal shade of hopeful as he latched his thumbs onto the buckle of his belt.
She was standing in the hallway outside the common room watching a few of the Avengers through a sheet of glass as they sat at the far end of the next room. Her arms were crossed over her chest as she focused on the newest member of the team, Y/N, a young woman with the ability to manipulate magnetic material. Y/N was sitting in the common room with Sam and Wanda, watching tv and playing on her cell phone.
"Doesn't seem to want to socialize but I guess I can't really judge her based on that," Natasha stated simply. "She's young... I want her to feel like she fits in here, she needs a family of some sort."
Steve looked at the scowl that Y/N wore, her forehead furrowed, her mouth set in a grimace. "She'll warm up. It's only been a month." Steve could see the light in anyone and he had faith she'd be fine.
They watched as the younger Avenger looked up from her phone to the tv, with what appeared to be a look of light disgust on her face.
Steve's head tilted sideways like a dog, "Might take some time."
"Hey, everyone."
Steve and Natasha turned around to see Peter Parker step off the elevator, backpack in tow. "Cap'n, Miss Rom— Black Widow...?" he said, not sure exactly which name to call Natasha.
"Hi, Peter," Steve said in a deep voice.
Natasha took a step closer and rested her hand on one of Peter's shoulders. "Do I make you nervous, kid?" Her tone was friendly but she was making a point. The spy who once had a much firmer exterior shell had softened over the years as her new family grew.
"No, no," Peter shook his head, his eyebrows drawn together. "Yes, actually." He held his palms up to her, "But it's not just you, it's everyone," he gulped, "especially anyone who's not... a guy." He gave an awkward yet honest little laugh.
"You'll get there," she laughed, taking a soft swipe at his head, ruffling his hair.
"Peter," Steve chimed in, "Y/N's here. Why don't you go in and talk to her? She's just about your age."
Peter's eyes darted up to Steve's face. "Uh yeah, okay. I mean... yes, Captain."
Steve chuckled after Peter walked through the glass door. "I keep telling him he doesn't have to address me as Captain all the time." His blue eyes twinkled as he watched Peter approach the couch where Y/N was sitting. "I was so awkward with women at his age."
"Were?" Natasha raised a playful eyebrow at him.
"You know what, Romanoff?" he questioned sarcastically.
They watched as Y/N seemed to easily converse with Peter... more easily than Peter, anyway. - He looked nervous.
"See?" Steve elbowed Natasha's arm before turning to walk away. "She's fine."
