"Okay," Steve said, looking towards Natasha, "Nat, you take over. I'm taking him to the locker room."
Y/N ran her hands over her hair and stared at the floor, breathing a heavy sigh. "Come on," Nat said, grabbing her arm gently and giving a little chuckle, "he'll be fine. Let's work on something else." Y/N looked blankly at her.
"You just did what Steve told you to do," Sam said. "Besides, he probably deserved that. I saw him trying to break your concentration." Sam snickered to himself. "I thought he was going to try to make out with you right there. Did he get your bra unhooked?"
Natasha, Wanda, and Y/N turned to look at Sam.
"What?" he asked with a smile. "Seems like the old fart likes her."
"Who? Steve?" Natasha laughed.
"No, Bucky... why, does Steve?" Sam asked.
"Guys, I'm right here..." Y/N said. "Hello?"
"Yeah, we know," Wanda smiled. "But this is juicy."
"So Steve likes Y/N too?"
Natasha started to answer but they heard Steve's footsteps coming closer from inside the locker room. Sam quickly stepped behind Y/N and threw his arm around her in a choke hold again as Natasha stood in front of her like she was going to give her direction. Steve stopped in the doorway of the locker room and watched for a second.
"Y/N?" he called out.
When she looked at him, he waved her over. She knew she was in trouble now.
"Hey," he said, his voice soft with a little smile as she got close to him. "I'm sorry about that, I hope you're not too upset..." he looked at her face for feedback but she was looking down. "You just did what I told you to do, it wasn't your fault." Y/N nodded without looking at him as they walked slowly on the far side of the gym. "Maybe I'm pushing you a little too hard but I just want you to be safe. You've already done a great job with getting in shape - the cardio, the weight lifting... but I need to make sure you can defend yourself. I'm the one who brought you into this mess, I just need to know you'll be safe."
"I understand."
"You're upset," he said.
"No, I'm..." she started, "this is just hard for me because I feel so bad at it and I'm an overachiever. I really want to show you I can do this."
"We'll get you there," he smiled, patting her shoulder. "Go ahead back over with Nat. I'm going back to check on Bucky."
"Is he okay?" she asked, her face looking worried.
"He'll be okay," Steve said, his smile slipping away as his heart started feeling heavy. He couldn't help but think she was interested in Bucky. And he couldn't help but think if he would have just shown her how he felt, maybe it wouldn't be too late now. But he had no inkling that she had feelings for him anyway. He put on a brave smile, "Don't worry, it'll be okay." He turned and walked back towards the locker room.
A short time later, they were all sitting in the conference room, now joined by Tony and Vision.
"Well, I don't want to drag this out so I'm just going to say it," Tony said, pacing in front of the table. "You know, though... maybe I don't want to just blurt it out," he said, more to himself than the rest of them. "I don't know, I'm just not sure." He stopped and put his hands down firmly on the conference table and looked up at them. "You people are all in trouble..."
They looked around at each other and then back at Tony.
"You're all in trouble if you don't get back to your quarters and pack a bag in the next hour. We're leaving, kids."
