While Steven was at Birch Tree, Lilly was anxiously waiting for him to come back. Lilly was hoping that Steven hadn't left her and was never coming back. She needed him since he was her only friend. Everybody didn't even know that Lilly existed or so she thought because nobody sat with her at lunch. Or because nobody played with her at recess. Or because whenever the teacher said get into groups of two nobody raced to Lilly and said "will you be my partner?". But today everything was different.

Lilly was sitting on her porch steps waiting for Steven while reading The Mother-Daughter Book Club book #1. Lilly said to herself "I wish I could be like Jess Delaney. She lives on farm surrounded by adorable animals. She's got brothers to keep her company. And she's got a great best friend named Emma Hawthorne." When suddenly someone walked up the steps. It was Meg. Of all the people in the world Meg was the one who had to come over. Lilly decided to just be nice and hope that Meg would do the same. "Hello Meg! How are you doing? Are you doing anything fun this weekend? I suggest going on a hike up a White Mountain." Lilly said all perky. "Hi Lilly. Why are you so perky? I mean if I were you I'd be crying. Ya know what with being alone." Meg replied in a sassy way. "What do you want Meg?" asked Lilly. "Well I want to be rich and famous. I want to marry someone from One Direction and/or Matt. I want to be pretty..." Meg answered counting with her fingers. "Ha ha. Very funny. I meant why are you here?" "Because I want to be your friend. You need a friend and I'll be it." "Meg you have bullied me several times. Why would I want to be your friend. And besides I made a new friend. His name is Steven but he doesn't live in Carter so you'll never meet him." "Fine! Don't be my friend I was just trying to be nice!" Then Meg stormed off.

The confused Lilly watched in awe as the the blonde stomped away. What did I do? she wondered. Whatever. Why should she care about what Meg's problem was. That was exactly what it sounded like, Meg's problem. Lilly still didn't understand why Meg cared about being her friend, she had been so mean to her. But Lilly still thought maybe she should've taken Meg up on her offer. Oh well!
