A green smoothie in one hand and my phone in the other I went through the documents displayed on my tablet laying before me on the kitchen counter. I sipped the green smoothie which tasted like mint and green apples while I listened to the rushed explanation of Bennet, the assistant to the CEO of Valentine Enterprises. He was in a rush because he messed up and our CEO, Maxen Valentine, was not pleased at all.

"I got it handled, Bennet," I reassured the man who sounded like he was near tears.

I heard him inhale deeply before he answered me, "Thank you, Miss Carter."

"Ruby." I told him, "You can call me Ruby, okay?"

He responded with an actual laugh which made me smile, "Okay then, Ruby." The fact that he emphasized my name made me laugh as well.

"Don't concern yourself with this matter anymore. Get some rest and I see you at eight."

Ending the call I finished the rest of my green smoothie, rinsed the glass and put it away in the dishwasher. Turning my tablet off I dropped it in my bag and took my phone with me as I made my way to the bedroom. Daylight was already streaming into the apartment, yet somehow the apartment which had tons of windows still felt like a dark and moody place. I knew it had very little to do with the lighting in the place and a whole lot to do with the mood between my boyfriend and I. The fact that I was leaving at five in the morning would worsen that mood.
Pushing through the door I glanced at the man who was still laying under the covers, half asleep because he wasn't expected at the office in another three hours or so. I entered my walk-in closet and checked my reflection in the tall mirror. Straightening my peach colored dress I ran my fingers through my dark hair to fix it and double checked to see if my makeup was still picture perfect. Reapplying my nude colored lipstick I spritzed on some perfume which smelled like a field of roses and put on my heels. I was ready to tackle all the problems at Valentine Enterprises and make the CEO feel a little less like firing half the staff because one of them screwed up.
Leaving the closet I closed the door behind me and met the angry gaze of my boyfriend who still looked half asleep but a lot less peaceful than a minute ago.

"I'm heading to-"

"The office?" He asked, sitting up, "Yeah, what's new?"

The never-ending argument would start all over again, I was not in the mood to go through the same subjects over and over again. Not when Maxen Valentine was at the office, brooding and making calls to his Tokyo branch to ensure Bennet didn't royally screw up. The fact that he was making those calls didn't bother me, what bothered me was the fact that I wasn't at his side to defuse the situation. It could be fixed, loyal people didn't need to get belittled over the fact that they sent their company driver to the wrong airport to pick up a VIP and take them to their hotel which was also the wrong hotel which they made reservations at.

"I can't do this right now, I need to fix-"

"What about us, Ruby? When are you going to take the time to fix us?"

"We need to be fixed?" I asked him, an all too familiar ringtone echoing through the tension-filled bedroom.

Without even a second thought I answered it, "Maxen, please calm down. I'm on my way, we can fix this. I promise-"

"Of course, Maxen freaking Valentine." My boyfriend sighed, getting out of bed and heading to the bathroom, "Just to clarify-" He pointed at my phone as he stood in front of me, "He is the problem and you know how to fix that."

I ignored his angry words and moved past him, heading to the living room to grab my jacket and bag, "Already out the door. I see you in a few minutes." There was no doubt about Maxen hearing the things the boyfriend had said. He was thankfully mature enough to focus on the main issue right now, our upset VIP.
