Crying and hiccuping while calling my mother hadn't been the greatest idea, ever but Nadia delivered. I found myself seated on the couch with a glass of wine in hand, this particular scene seemed oddly familiar to me as Maxen walked in and raised an eyebrow at me in question. The look on his face agreed with my thoughts about this scene. So my husband panicked.

"You okay?" His voice quiet.

My mother snorted, the sudden noise causing my husband to finally be aware of the other people present in the room. It was unlike Maxen to miss such an obvious thing, but I couldn't blame him when he had been focused solemnly on me.

"Of course she isn't, Maxen." My mother rarely used his given name to talk to him as if he was a child who got caught breaking the rules, "Your spoiled brat of a sister has once again messed up and walked all over my little girl, knowing Ruby can't rain on her parade because of her loyalty towards you."

Maxen's eyes trailed to the man sitting across me, "Can we do this another time, Nadia?" He asked tightly. The change in his voice alerted me and when I observed my husband I realized what changed about him.

Trying to hide my chuckle I sipped my wine, it helped to make me feel better. The rich wine was delicious, it had to be considering it cost nine hundred dollars a bottle. Only people like the man sitting next to my mother would gift someone expensive wine like that. At Valentine Enterprises we sometimes gifted VIPs wine like that, but rarely.

"Don't mind Everett, he was so generous to let me tag along with him on his private jet."

Everett also brought me a nine hundred dollar bottle of red wine so I was totally okay with him being here. Maxen's look told me he wasn't on the same page as me. He took a seat beside me, placing his hand on my knee. It was a possessive gesture which wasn't appreciated right now. I think Everett could tell I was taken by the ring around my finger.

"So what are you and Dawson doing here?"

My mother's face lit up, "Oh, you know Everett?"

Something about her look told me she anticipated this moment, her eyes challenging my husband. I had no idea what was going on but at the moment I was done being the shadow of Maxen. After crying my eyes out I didn't have much strength left in me. I needed to recharge and my mother was aware of this. She was taking care of me, being a mama bear despite her not always being around or living according to rules set by society.

"Of course I know the guy who is wasting his father's money by hopping from party to party."

Everett's lips curled up into a smirk, "Is that jealousy I detect?" He asked, his bright blue eyes glittering with amusement.

"There is nothing about your life which makes me envy you." Maxen coldly expressed.

"Oh." The mocking tone Everett used was to spur Maxen on, usually I'd help Maxen but my husband could figure things out himself, "Here I thought you might be a little jealous since we come from similar backgrounds but you're so strict and proper all the time behaving like an old man while I can actually enjoy life."

Maxen enjoyed working at Valentine Enterprises, but he didn't need me to tell Everett that. He could handle things on his own, he was after all very proud of his achievements so far. I finished my wine and reached for the bottle to refill my glass. My husband stopped me however which earned him a little glare from me.

"You had quite enough, darling" He whispered to me.

Everett chuckled, "You never change." He told Maxen and then got to his feet, "I do have a few things to take care of so I leave you to it." His eyes sliced to mine, "I'm sure we'll have another opportunity to get to know each other, darling."
