Maxen folded his arms across his chest, sternly observing us. When neither Wes nor I spoke up, my husband dropped his arms to his side, sauntered to the couch and took a seat. Turning to face him I flashed him an apologizing look, I wanted to explain everything to him but I couldn't. I had to either stay quiet or start telling him lies. Neither of those options appealed to me. There was a third option, that'd be me running away from him. At the moment that was the best option I had. So I made a move to leave the room.

"Don't even think about it, Ruby," Maxen warned me.

It was scary that he read my mind like that, then again I didn't have control over my emotions like usual. My emotions were all over the place. No doubt he read my face without any effort.

"It's not what you think." Wes spoke up, breaking the tension, "But at the moment I don't want Ruby to share what I told her with anyone."

"I know it's not that." Maxen voice was quiet yet intimidating, "Ruby would never ruin what we have, but there is something going on and from the looks of it it's something serious." He trailed his eyes back to me, "I thought we weren't going to have any secrets from each other anymore."

"Well, that's not entirely true, is it?"

He didn't like me questioning him, displeasure was clear in his stormy gaze, "What?"

I gulped, awkwardly wrapping my arms around me, "Naomi Tachibana."

Maxen scoffed, obviously he didn't like me going there while Wes was present. If he read the mood he'd know I didn't like him questioning me when Wes was present either. When I shot a glance at said man I could tell he didn't like being in the room either. We were all just uncomfortable, wanting to end this awkwardness but not knowing how to. Wes was probably thinking about making a run for it too. Unfortunately for me, he'd be able to get away with it while I had to endure the awkwardness.

"If that's how you're going to be Ruby, we're going to have problems."

His words were cold, never did I hear him speak to me that way. Not once did he refer to me as his darling either. It hurt, it hurt seeing the anger in his eyes which was directed at me. Wes cleared his throat, making both of us snap our attention to him.

"I should go."

Maxen narrowed his eyes at him, "You should."

I wanted to tell Maxen to reel it in, but he wouldn't appreciate it and it'd only make things worse. So I kept quiet and met Wes' gaze when he spun around, ready to leave the apartment. I threw him an apologizing look, hoping he understood that neither one of us meant to be harsh toward him. Emotions were just running high at the moment.

"Call me if you need anything," Wes whispered to me.

I nodded, showing him a subtle smile, "You too."

When Wes left the apartment, Maxen gestured for me to sit beside him. Slipping my heels off, I kicked them aside and settled on the couch beside my husband. Things were going to stay uncomfortable between us and I blamed his sister for it.

"You're going to keep this up?" He asked.

"I don't want to, but a promise is a promise."

Maxen stared at me for a while before he spoke up, sounding very annoyed with me, "Fine." He got to his feet, "I'm going to freshen up. I already had dinner so you should take care of yourself." With that, he left the room.

Not being able to deal with this I grabbed my phone and called Jasmine. The woman had to talk to her brother and fast because I couldn't go to bed when things were unsettled between Maxen and I. We've been through this once and Maxen was the one who ensured that we'd be able to get through it. I wasn't as confident nor determined as my husband. I couldn't move us forward without bringing up the situation. Then it would make me an even worse person because I broke a promise.
