Zola lifted her wrist and checked the time on her emerald coloured watch.
"Time to go Coby."sighed Zola as she gradually pulled herself up. Coby stretched then stood and eagerly caught up with Zola.
"Almost home now Coby. " Zola sighed dreamily.
Coby yawned in response. Fiddling with her keys Zola pulled them out of her pocket and quietly opened the front door. The door stretched open.Silence.
"Gran?" Zola whispered.
Zola crept into the kitchen with Coby padding along behind.
"Gran!" Zola drew a sharp intake of breath and them all of a sudden big, fat, salty tears piled down her cheeks. Zola rushed over to her Gran and covered what looked like a gun wound on her Grandma's chest with her hand to stop the chronic bleeding. Zola lay her head on her beloved Granny's shoulder.
" Zola. " Croaked Granny.
" Granny! " Zola yelped in suprise.
" shh dear.... They .... They are going to come for... For ..you ...I need you to hide with Coby now and ... And then " whispered Granny breathing heavily. " I ... You ... And ....cob.. Nee. ...to ..run!
" Granny! " Zola sobbed.
Granny's eyes drifted closed and she sighed as if she was falling asleep. Maybye that's what death was. Falling into an endless sleep.
" Not here! " shouted a rough male voice.
Zola whipped Coby into her arms, quickly kissed her gran on the forehead and dashed for her room. First she opened the secret door in the ceiling and pushed Coby up the hole while Zola crawled behind. Once they were both in her bedroom she took off Coby's leash, then she collapsed on the floor crying. Coby nudged her with sad, longing eyes and nuzzled into her neck. Eventually they both fell asleep on Zola's comfy plum carpet, with the tea lights around the room lulling them into a false sense of peace, yet it was comforting. For now.
Zola awoke with sore and puffy eyes but it was no time to worry about what she looked like. Zola needed to get herself and Coby to safety. She quietly crawled to the edge of her room, away from the snoring dog, to peer through the crack in her wall to see if the intruders were still there. There was no sign of them. Coby slowly wriggled up and strode over to Zola.
" Coby can you check if you can hear anyone other than us in the house? Listen. " asked Zola, she had been working on the trick 'listen' for quite a while but had never actually used it in this type of situation. Coby pricked his ears up then looked down which meant , no. Zola sighed and miserably pondered why these horrible people were trying to find or kill innocent people.
But then all of the puzzle pieces fitted together and Zola realized why they wanted her.
A special force group were talked about all over the news, saying that they were hunting the rebel groups of Anopheles all over the world and that the humans almost had complete control over Zantarium. Of course Zola wasn't pleased by this but there was nothing she could do to stop it. Why were humans so unreasonable? Zola now knew that they must have found out about her and wanted to kill her for being Anopheles. Zola grabbed the book her mum had given her and flipped to the pages she hadn't read yet. Zola traced the words with her finger, scanning the pages with her chestnut eyes. She finally came to the last page. The book ended with the following sentence : ' Zola be careful. For you are half of the greatest threat to humans and half of the greatest threat to Anopheles. Zola you are the most threatening being in this world. Try and find others like you and survive together. Keep your friends close but your enemies closer because you are DEADLY. '
Zola shut the book her heart pounding. So that's why they want me no , that's why they need me. This special force group want me to kill rebelling Anopheles and humans for them.
" Coby this is gonna be one hell of an adventure. " sighed Zola as she grabbed the biggest but lightest rucksack she owned and started packing. She packed four crisp twenty pound notes in a purse, clothes, a towel, toiletries including a hairbrush, long lasting food, a waterbottle filled with ice, medicine and finally a knife.
"Done!" Announced Zola. "Time to go."
Once again she got out of her room helping Coby down afterwards. It was odd. Any stranger would think this was just a normal house if they had not known the events of last night. There was no sign of any merciless intruders. Zola put her bag down by the door and entered the kitchen. Her Gran was still there in the same position. Zola's eyes glazed over but willed herself to be strong and urged herself onwards. Zola gently picked her Gran up and tip-toed up the stairs then put her Granny on the bed so if anyone was to enter the house they would think she was sleeping. Zola hugged and then kissed her Gran then ran down the stairs, threw her rucksack on and while holding Coby's leash in one hand she smiled at him. It was just like Zola, always hiding how she really felt as not to alarm others. She confidently opened the door and walked outside. It was a warm, bright day and Zola quickly closed and locked the door. Zola gave the house that she has lived in for most of her life one final glance then ran for it all the way to Moonestone hill. Replaying in her head at each step ' Run, Run ,Run.'
