The alarm did not ring. No beeping noises roused anybody awake. The early morning peace carried on till it grew into the late morning peace.
That was the problem.
Miańè was late to school all thanks to her alarm. And she hated being late. Being late to school meant letting everybody stare at you as you walked up to your place. She hated being looked at. She preferred staying in her own personal space and blocking out any social behavior. She was going to school, that was 'social' enough. She didn't throw a tantrum though. All she did was curse under her breath all the way to her school. And school was not too close by.
Little did she know, that it was her mother who had actually turned her alarm off- she didn't want her daughter going to school on her birthday now..
Miańè dressed up quickly into her black and white uniform. A skirt that just covered her knees. It wasn't supposed to actually, she just didn't like her knees. She coughed down her eggs and toast and washed it down with milk, then freshened herself and jumped into her shoes. After bidding her Mom a sweet 'Goodbye' she headed towards the station, and resumed her cursing.
Miańè took the train to school everyday, and that was one part of the journey she liked. She liked the movement of he train and the constant shift in scenery, although it was the same scenery everyday, she just liked it for the fact that it did change every second. The train was mostly empty today as she had missed the morning rush, and she sat herself next to the window as usual.
Staring outside, Miańè would let her thoughts wander and flicker as fast as the ever-changing view. She would overlook pretty houses and underlook skyscrapers. Watch people do weird stuff in public or just watch a policeman be a policeman. She would think about stuff at school. What she went through and what was going to come. That stupid Integral test or the upcoming birthday party of that one classmate she hated.
Miańè froze.
She whipped out her phone and checked the date.
28-Feb, 2018
It was her birthday.
She was going to school on her birthday. She flinched at the thought of all the bullying that was to come and whined.
She wanted to take a break. A break from everybody. All the routine and formalities. All the rules and consequences. She suddenly felt tired.
School wasn't that bad, she just felt out of place there. She wasn't as popular as she was four years ago. She wasn't pretty anymore. Not that bubbly. All she did now was hide her brown eyes behind her glasses and hoped to hide herself under her long black hair.
She was the invisible, shy girl at school, who sometimes got bullied.
She remembered when she was lit though.
When she would always get selected into whatever she tried out for. How she could ask anyone out without feeling the least bit scared. How she would laugh and sing on stage, not the least bit bothered.
Now, she wondered if her class would even realize that she wasn't at school yet. She decided that they would not. They would probably be discussing how lame their Math teacher is and what a load of bogus their Integral test was going to turn out to be.
Her phone buzzed in her hand.

'Coming to school?'

It was her friend, Casey, the girl that sat next to her. Wrong. She didn't have any friends. It was just Casey, the girl who sat next to her.

'Nate realized your birthday, he's rallied up the class to launch 17 water balloons...'

Miańè flinched again. So they did notice. She felt a dread building up in her gut. Everyone enjoyed this water balloon ceremony, even the birthday boy sometimes. They would all laugh and roar, ducking under missiles of Hydrogenated Oxygen. It was probably just Miańè who didn't like it. Hated it would be more appropriate a term.

'Not coming 2 schl..'

Miańè replied. She had made a decision. She did hesitate though. But then she wondered if the old Miańè would hesitate.
The Miańè before her Dad had died.
She texted her Mom quickly that she was skipping school today. Her mom texted her back instantly. She seemed happy.
She rested her forehead on the glass pane and resolved to travel the distance.
She planned to take the train all the way to the last stop.
