The coming breeze blew my soft brown hair across my face, letting me know spring was almost over. I tugged my book bag over one shoulder and stepped on the sidewalk near my house. I counted the steps it took to appear at my doorstep inside my head as if I were a little girl counting sheep. My fingers clenched the doorknob as I took in a deep breath. My eyes sealed shut as I stepped inside, mentally preparing myself for any chaos that would happen next.

“Sophia Grace! Where have you been? You have a list of chores you had to do and it’s three now!” my dad faced me with a stern look on his face. Wow, this is going to go over well. “Dad, I had school. You know it’s only Thursday.” I took a step back, smelling the alcohol on his breath. “Don’t get an attitude with me, you disrespectful little brat. You should be lucky you still have me after your mother left. I should have just abandoned you instead,” he grumbled.

He turns around, grabbing the nearest thing around him. Great, a flower pot for his weapon. I try to move but it’s too late. The weapon had already smashed down on my head, sending shards of glass everywhere. Blood oozed out of my head, gushing onto my arms and dripping off my fingers. He tightened his hands into fists and swung them at me, never missing. When I fell down, almost knocking out, I felt something gripping around my neck, a belt. Thoughts swarmed through my head as I began to see the light. The light of heaven welcoming me, the newcomer.
