Penny Haywood x Ravenclaw reader: Triwizard tournament

Wow. Not a Merula x reader??? And reader isn't in Slytherin??? This is new. Also I'm way too lazy to think of new challenges so the triwizard tournament is the same as in the Harry Potter books lol not sorry.

Penny Haywood x Ravenclaw reader

"How have you been today? I couldn't find you at lunch." Penny said while running up to you while you were both walking towards your next class. There was a reason Penny couldn't find you at lunch, it wasn't that you were avoiding her or anything but you were definitely avoiding her. You were going to speak to one of the professors about extra credit and you overheard a group of teachers and Dumbledore talking about the second challenge in the triwizard tournament. It was going to involve someone that you cared about being in danger. Penny had already helped you by brewing a last minute fire-resistance potion during the first challenge and you didn't want her putting herself even more into the competition and end up being in danger, which is why you were avoiding her. You were trying to distance yourself from her so that she wouldn't be chosen as the one you care about.

"I was, uhh, busy." You said, making minimal eye contact as you walked with her to herbology class. She didn't seem to understand what was happening and kept walking with you, even with you trying to speed up. She kept trying to look you in the eyes but you were just looking at the ground.

"Too busy for your friend?" She asked, her voice cracking. You could hear how hurt she was when she caught on that you were trying to get away from her. When you didn't answer she stopped walking, grabbing your arm and stopping you from leaving. She looked into your eyes, you know that she could see that you were hurting too but there was nothing you could do until the end of the next challenge, you loved her too much for her to get hurt.

"We're not friends." You said after she kept looking at you, waiting for you to reassure her and explain to her why you were acting so strange. You wanted to explain to her and tell her it was all going to be okay but you weren't quite sure how they were deciding who means the most to you and you didn't want to risk anything. "I only hang out with you because you follow me around. And.. and I find you annoying. So please, just leave me alone. Okay?"

Penny's eyes widen at your words and her mouth hangs open like she was going to say something to you. You see her eyes start to water right before there's a stinging pain on the side of your face, and everyone around you turns around when they hear the slap. Penny ran away, and you couldn't blame her. You stayed standing there, people around you looking confused but not asking questions. It was what you had to do. Now Penny wasn't going to get hurt.

The thing about someone you care about being in danger ended up being right. They were all at the bottom of the black lake and there was only an hour to save them. Rowan had spent her every moment of the past week figuring out a way for you to be underwater for the hour, which ended up just being an easy fix of transfiguring your lungs into fish gills. You had assumed that Rowan would be the one at the bottom of the lake but you saw her emerge from the crowd and you started to panic, who were you trying to save then? You hadn't seen Ben in a while, or Bill, or like any of your other friends come to think of it.

The challenge started and you quickly changed your lungs to gills before diving into the water, following the path of the other participants, who were a little bit ahead of you. When you arrived to the opening in the water where your loved ones were being held your heart sank. She was there. Her golden hair floating like a halo around her in the water. You tried so hard and even made her upset to try to keep her out of danger and it didn't even end up working, she was still put in harm's way. You felt a sick feeling in your stomach as you swam as fast as you could to get her untied, and out of the water. You held onto her as tight as you could and you brought her up to the surface. You were in a complete state of panic until you could hear her coughing and gasping for air. You were the second one out of the water and another person followed behind you shortly after. You brought Penny back and transfigured your lungs back, both of you coughing and gasping, trying to get a normal breathing pattern back.

"Penny, I... I'm sorry about before. If you'd let me explain I can-" you were trying your best to form a complete sentence but kept tripping over your own words. You were cut off by Rowan running over and hugging you both, dropping a blanket on you both and congratulating you, beaming with pride and praise. Most of hogwarts followed Rowan is congratulating you, except for Merula and her gang who still had an unreasonable hate for you even though you tried to befriend them and be as nice as you can to them. You turned your attention to the cheering crowd, joining in on the cheering. You stood up, grabbing penny's hand and bringing her up with you, making her let out a small gasp in surprise. She smiled at you and you pulled her in for a quick kiss. Neither of you knew that you were going to kiss her but when you pulled away Penny was only smiling even more, joining in to cheer you on.

Penny had agreed to meet you at the entrance to her dorm before curfew. You never got the chance to explain yourself to her and to apologize for the pain you caused her (which ended up being for nothing).

"Okay Penny hear me out. When I was being mean to you and ignoring you it was all because I heard about the next challenge and I wanted you to be safe because I care about you so much and I just wanted to make sure you were safe. I mean it ended up being completely for nothing anyway." You spoke quickly and perfectly, going over the speech you had planned in your head before Penny showed up. You were expecting her to still be mad at you but she just started giggling, her cute laugh making your heart swell.

"I figured as much." She smiled at you. You thanked her for talking with you and were ready to say goodbye to her for the night when she took your hand in her's. Rubbing your hand gently with her thumb. "Let's just say that if it was me competing in the triwizard tournament, you'd be the one at the bottom of the lake."

You grinned like a complete idiot, grabbing her other hand as she moved closer to you. Your lips met for a proper kiss this time.
