Mild canon divergence because the reader and Merula are like kinda friends and Merula is still friends with Barnaby.
One of the lovely people who read my stories help me come up with the idea for this one but idk if they'd be cool with being mentioned so for the moment being they're anonymous.

Merula Snyde x Slytherin reader

You weren't the type of person to just go up to people and talk to them. The opposite actually. You were completely terrified of talking to new people. You were fine with people who you were close with- friends and family and such- but with strangers or people you don't talk to much you're terrified. So obviously picking up your life and going to a school with people you've never met before wasn't an ideal circumstance. At least that was when you were eleven so it wasn't as bad as it is now so you managed to make one friend.
But even sometimes Rowan- your one friend- still made you uncomfortable and sometimes anxious during conversations when she would ask you questions or expect you to lead the conversation. The one person who never made you uncomfortable in conversations was Merula. At first it was pure adrenaline and hate taking charge above your fears, but your relationship quickly developed into something more of a friendship where you playfully insult each other but really do care about each other. Most slytherins are extremely intimidating so you hadn't talked to any other people in your house, you weren't even sure that any of them knew you existed.
You had been sitting in the Slytherin common room alone with a pile of books in front of you, looking for the answers to your care for magical creatures homework. Suddenly Merula walks over to you with one of her friends walking(more like being dragged along) with her. She shoved her friend down on the couch opposite to you and took a seat next to you. You looked at her with wide eyes and your fight or flight response was about to kick in but just before it could, Merula put on hand on your shoulder and another on one of your hands and it calmed you down a bit.
"_______, this is my friend Barnaby. He was just talking about how he likes duelling and how much fun the duelling club is going to be and it reminded me about how you also talked about duelling and the duelling club." Merula said, introducing you to him and giving you a common interest to talk about. You grabbed onto Merula's hand and held it tight, her being there and touching you and her smell around you calmed your heart rate and helped you slow your own breathing down. You gave him a shy wave an a weak smile, him giving you an enthusiastic wave and a huge smile. You had a short awkward conversation about duelling and the duelling club, agreeing to join together and hang out during the meetings. It was it wasn't either of your main interests.
"Is that homework from care for magical creatures? I could help you with it." He said when he noticed all the books and paper.
"Really? Thanks." You said quietly, smiling a bit as it was the one class you had a bit of trouble with. Merula stayed sitting with you, holding you, while you were talking to Barnaby, starting to develop a friendship with him. The conversation involving magical creatures felt more natural. You were still just letting him talk and adding a few things to what he says but at least you were talking to a new person who looked pretty intimidating and you normally would not have talked to.

———

Merula was sitting upright on her bed with you lying down, resting your head on her lap. She was gently running her hands through your hair.
"Sorry for just kind of springing that thing on you earlier. Barnaby's a sweet kid and he's easy to talk to but even if I told you that before you still wouldn't have the balls to talk to him." Merula's insulting joke was a little less extreme than normal since she knew about your fear of talking to people. You got up, sitting up next to her.
"Yea I get it. It's true I probably wouldn't have talked to him if you told me before." You said, sounding a little sad as you noticed that your fear is definitely holding back and thinking about all the missed opportunities. Merula took notice and put her hand on your cheek, turning you face to look at her.
"Hey, you got over it though. You talked to him. You talked to a new person. I'm proud of you." She said with a smile you rarely saw. She searched your eyes and she could tell that made you feel better about yourself. She pulled you into a tight hug.
"I love you." You whispered into her shoulder. It kind of just came out. Everything she did and said had always made your heart skip a beat and your stomach fill with butterflies. You had noticed it but never acknowledged it. So you saying it might have just been the realization, triggered by her trying to help you get over your greatest fear.
You felt her her tense as she was still hugging you. She heard you. She backed away from you slowly, keeping her hands around you still but making enough distance to look at you. She looked into your eyes for a second before they gaze darted down to your lips and she suddenly dove forward.
You were surprised that she kissed you instead of leaving you without saying another word. But she didn't. She kissed you. You put your hands around the back of Merula's head, running your fingers through her hair. When she pulled away you immediately missed the warmth of her lips on yours and you wanted to do it again. She was much taller than you so she was looking down at you, still insanely close to you.
"You don't know how long I've been waiting to do that." She said completely out of breath.
