"Have a seat," Blue Hair says, gesturing to the beanbag near her bed.
I awkwardly sit down. Blue Hair flops down on her bed. "So, Curly-"
"-Freya," I interrupt. I find it kind of funny that she nicknamed me according to my hair because I had done the same to her. Curly and Blue Hair.
"Freya," she continues, "what brings you to my humble abode this pleasant day?"
"Uh, well, Blue Hair..." I pause, waiting for her to fill in her name. She just blinks at me.
That's awkward.
"Um..." I say uncomfortably, "what's your name?"
Blue Hair grins slyly at me. "I'm so glad you asked, darling. I'm Ruthe. So what exactly are you doing in my room again?"
Ruthe. I file that away in the "to remember" part of my brain.
"Uh, well, I'm here for an explanation. See, when you talked to me the other day you mentioned some weird things going on here. I've been watching but I haven't seen anything out of the ordinary.
A sly smile spreads across Ruthe's face. "You just haven't been looking hard enough."
I give her a quizzical look and she sighs.
"Look, it's taken me almost two years to notice these things," she says. "I wouldn't expect you to notice anything in just a day."
"Well, would you like to tell me what they are? You were going to tell me when I met you yesterday, but you ran off into your room before you could tell me anything..."
"Okay, fine, if you insist."
"Um, but I didn't-"
Ruthe interrupts me, "do you want to hear it or not?"
I nod.
"So yesterday I was starting to tell you about the teachers."
"What about them?" I ask.
"Stop interrupting me! I was about to tell you. So I noticed a couple of things. First of all, we never see the teachers outside of school! The island isn't that big and there are lots of teachers working here. Where do they all stay? Secondly, I've been analyzing all of my teachers during class recently. I've discovered something odd: the teachers aren't fanpeople."
I gape at her. "But they have to be! And they teach the material so well."
"Yeah," Ruthe says, "they know the material well. Really well. But only because they've been studying it for years!"
"Well is there only one odd thing about this place? Because it seems pretty normal, other than the teachers I guess."
She shakes her head. "No, there's something else. And it's the deal breaker for me; it was the thing that made me most suspicious of this place."
"What is it?"
"Story time," Ruthe says with a grin. "Last year I had a friend named Miles. He was several years older than me and he was a fanboy, of course, but I met him in Fanfic class. We eventually became close friends, but he was a senior in Fan High. Before he graduated, we promised to keep in touch.
"When Miles left I asked him to send me updates on what was happening with him; we've never been told what happens with us fanpeople after we graduate Fan School! Miles was very faithful. He texted me several times throughout the day, explaining how he and the other graduates were sent off on a boat to another island.
"Three days after he left, he sent me a disturbing text. In it, he mentioned that something was wrong. He felt like something was up with the boat crew, he told me that he was scared.
"I laughed and reassured him, saying that he was such a scaredy-cat and that everything would be fine. He hasn't replied. He's been gone a whole year, and now I know that there's something suspicious- and dangerous- going on around here."
