Chapter 1

Cam was staring at her, and she could see that he wanted to talk to her, but she avoided his eye, ducking into the crowd and escaping to her class, the only one she didn’t have with him.

Not having him as a friend was hard, but she didn’t want to start pretending with him, not like she did with everyone else. The thing about him was that he completely understood her and she hadn’t had to hide anything from him. It had been a relief to have someone like that. Now, it simply felt like a burden from the past.

If she hadn’t had  that friendship, she wouldn’t know what it felt like to have it, and thus, she wouldn’t long for it again.

    “He didn’t do anything wrong.”

Jumping, Jane turned at the sound of the deep voice. It hadn’t come from anyone she knew. Someone’s voice was something she remembered. It was a distinct reminder of people, even more so than their face. “Who are you?”

“My name is Joshua, I’ve recently started here, but I noticed the tension between you and your friend.”  The boy had black hair and beautiful blue eyes. His eyes reminded her of Cam’s. Taking the seat next to her, he set a bag by his feet.

    “I don’t have friends.”

He chuckled, finding something funny that she just didn’t understand. “Everyone has friends, whether they share the feeling or not, you will always have a friend. Remember that, Dear Jane, you will always have a friend.”

Her brows furrowed as he turned to the front of the classroom. “How did you know my name?” There was something off about the boy. He looked normal, he didn’t exactly talk normal for a teenage boy, but he looked completely normal. “Who are you?”

“Jane, is there something you’d like to share with the class?” Jerking her head up, she realized class had already started and everyone was now looking at her.

To save herself from embarrassment, she pointed at the boy. “The new boy was just talking to me and I was wondering who he was. I’m sure there’s more than just me that’s curious. Wouldn’t it be a good idea for him to introduce himself to the class?”

The teacher rolled his eyes, obviously knowing what Jane was doing, but he seemed to accept it as he motioned to the boy. “Stand up and tell us your name and where you’ve come from. You can tell us some of your hobbies while you’re standing.”

The boy stood, smiling at everyone, making some of the girls subtly fan themselves. There would be so much gossip about the boy by the end of the day. “I’m Joshua. I have traveled a lot throughout my life, so I don’t really have any specific place to tell of where I’ve come, but what’s important is I’m here now. And my hobby would be helping those that need help and giving to those that are in need.”

Nearly half the class ‘awed’ as he sat back down.

“Well, I’ve never heard an introduction like that before, and as much as I’m curious about the places you’ve been, we unfortunately don’t have time to discuss your personal life.” Joshua nodded, looking almost thankful, and pulled a notebook out of his bag.

“Alright class, get out your books and turn to page sixty-three. Today we’ll be talking about the Romans and how they…”

Jane tuned out the rest of the class as she watched Joshua. He was concentrating intently on what the teacher was saying, but she could see a strange smile attempting to break free, as if something were funny.
