Chapter 5
Groaning, Jane tried to sit up, but the pain in her head made so she couldn’t hardly do anything. Every movement made the pounding worse and every sound sent a sharp pain stabbing into her mind. What had she done to make her head hurt so badly? The last thing she remembered was getting home from the dance.
As the image of the last time she saw Cameron came to mind, she wanted to cry. He had looked so hurt, and she had been the one to cause it, but he had hurt her too.
He didn’t trust her to be able to take care of herself. Couldn’t he see that she knew how to take care of herself; that she had been doing it for years now? Why couldn’t he trust her and just accept her for who she was? Why did he have to try and change her?
“Jane, it is time to be up now. You’ve worried everyone far too long now. Don’t prolong this anymore.” For once she wasn’t annoyed at hearing Joshua around. He had been her rock when she couldn’t use Cameron.
She tried to sit up again, but this time she succeeded, with the help of Joshua. Her eyes were still closed, but she knew it was him, not only from his voice, but from his presence. Somehow, she just knew it was him. “What happened?” She was hunched forward, holding her head in her hands, hoping that’ll help some of the pain go away. Sadly, it wasn’t really working.
“You hit your head. It’s going to hurt for a while.” For some reason, his voice was strained, as if it was hard for him to say what he was saying.
“I don’t know if you’re lying or not, but I guess I’ll believe you. I don’t think you’ve lied to me before, even if I haven’t really liked everything you continue to say about C-”
“Is she awake yet?” He sounded out of breath, but also really worried.
Taking a chance, she opened her eyes, wincing at how much the light hurt her head. When she turned her head to the right, where she knew he was, a sharp pain shot through her neck and down her back. Straightening her neck, she put pressure on it, trying to make the pain go away.
“Jane, are you okay? You were in the hall just fine, then the next moment, you were on the floor. What happened?” He moved into her line of sight and she wondered how she was supposed to react. She was shutting him out, but seeing him so worried about her health just made her want to give him a chance.
He wasn’t accusing her about anything, that wasn’t where this worry was coming from. No, he simply wanted to make sure she was okay after some sort of accident.
“I don’t know what happened. I don’t remember anything.” As she thought about it, she realized she recognized where she was. She happened to be in the school’s nurse’s office, but why would she be there? “Isn’t today Sunday? Why am I at the school?” The more she tried to think about it the more her head hurt.
“How hard did she hit her head?” Cameron turned an accusing stare over her shoulder, so she knew it was at Joshua.
“Don’t blame him. It wasn’t his fault.”
After a prolonged moment of him still staring at Joshua, probably trying to force an answer out of him, he turned back to her. “How would you know? You can’t even remember what day it is. How do you know he didn’t do something to you? He could’ve been the one that made you fall over. You don’t even know anything about this guy.” His eyes were pleading with her; pleading that she’d see what he was seeing.
