Chapter 2

“Are you coming over tonight, Jane?” Marie nudged her shoulder, trying to get her attention. “Andrea is having a sleepover for all the girls and we want you to come.”

It had been two weeks since the campout and she still wasn’t talking to Cam. A part of her wanted to, but another part, the larger part, knew that if she did she’d simply lose herself again. She didn’t know how to be herself, let alone be herself when she was with him.

Every second around him would have her second guessing herself. If she did anything even remotely dangerous, she knew he’d think she didn’t care about her safety. She didn’t want to be near someone that did that to her.

“Jane’s on dish duty tonight.” Kat walked up behind her, sounding annoyed that she had been invited to a sleepover with her usual friends. Kat didn’t really have a right to be annoyed, but it seemed that she thought Jane’s friends were now hers instead of Jane’s because she didn’t hang around them anymore.

“Sorry Marie, maybe some other night.”

Kat didn't say anything, but Marie glared over Jane’s shoulder, surprising her. Marie had always been a really kind person. You’d have to do something really bad to be able to upset her. “Maybe we’ll just do the sleepover another night.”

“No, don’t call it off just because of me. You and Andrea and some of the other girls could still do it. I don’t have to be there for it to happen. I’m sure Kat would like to go.” She felt bad that the sleepover would be called off, but not that she’d not be able to go.

Marie mumbled something before smiling and shaking her head. Just before she said anything her phone beeped, signaling a new text message. Looking down, she seemed to instantly relax as she read it. “Its okay to call it off. It seems I have to do something else too. Andrea will understand. I’ll catch you later.”

After Marie was gone Kat sighed. “I’m going to guess that you didn’t actually want to go to the sleepover.”

“What gave you that idea. I went to sleepovers with them all the time. Why wouldn’t I go now?” Truth was that Friday nights had always been the times when Jane, Marie, and Andrea would get together, but after the campout Jane had purposely scheduled herself to have jobs that night so she no longer had to go. At least it was an excuse that couldn’t be ignored.

“That’s what we’re all wondering Jane. That’s what we’re all wondering.” Kat walked away, heading to the parking lot to wait in her car. It was now normal for Jane to ride with her, but before Jane had always done whatever she could to find another ride; usually it had been with Cam.

“Hey, Kat,” She stopped and turned around, waiting for her to continue. “I have a different way home today. Don’t worry about giving me a ride.” She hesitated for a moment before nodding and continuing down the hall.

They lived ten miles from the school, but today Jane wanted to walk. She didn’t want to be around anyone she knew, and she definitely didn’t want to feel Kat’s questioning gaze on her the entire ride home.

“I wouldn’t do that if I were you.”

Turning, Jane sighed. “You wouldn’t do what if you were me?” He opened his mouth, but she cut him off. “Actually I don’t want to hear it because you have no idea what you’d do if you were me. Besides, it doesn’t matter because you aren’t me, so I don’t care what you’d do.”
