you loved billy as much as someone could but he was never able to love you back the same because he was in the closet. any and all interactions you both had together were spent in private or sneaking around. after a semester, his charm slowly started to fade and you wanted more. you wanted to be with him, there's no doubt about that. even though he was too angry or impulsive sometimes, he was nice the rest of the times, funny, charming, and essentially sex on legs.
so, you decided to tell him one day while sitting on your bedroom floor. you sat with your back against your bed frame, his head on your thighs as you played with his hair and tried to picture how the conversation would go in your head. deciding that if you kept playing over all of the possibilities, the conversation would never happen, you decided to just go for it.
"you know i love you dacre," you started out, talking lightly. your hands didn't stop running through his hair as you talked.
his eyes were still closed when he responded with, "yeah, 'course i do." you nodded at the words despite the fact that he couldn't even see.
"i would never push you out of the closet," you said, wanting to make that very clear. "but i don't think i can do this anymore in secret."
his eyes snapped open before he quickly sat up so he was eye level with you.
"are you telling me that you're going to break up with me if i don't come out?" he said, his voice laced with anger. you tilted your head back, trying to take deep breaths.
"this isn't an ultimatum and i really don't want you to feel trapped. it's just... i love you so much and i want to tell the world. i just can't keep this a secret anymore but if you're not ready, i understand. when i came out, especially in a small town like this, there was and still is backlash. i love you and respect you, billy. but i have to be happy, too," you finished, looking over the soft features of your boyfriend's face. he wasn't mad like how you imagined he would be. rather, he looked like a lost puppy.
he stood up and without saying a word, walked out of the room and out of your house. it broke your heart to see him leave but you knew what you had said was rough to hear. despite telling yourself that, it didn't stop you from crying for a few nights, missing the way your hands fit together like puzzle pieces.
the next few days at school were torturous. small town, small high school. you saw him everywhere. he beautiful blue eyes were distant and you knew it was your fault.
society was a bitch.
it had been two weeks since you had talked to billy. two long weeks of hanging out with the few friends you had and feeling a bit empty inside. not even all the mint chocolate chip ice cream could fill the void.
on your way to class one day, you passed a group of boys laughing. then, you saw why. printed in ugly, black marker was the word "fag" printed boldly across your locker. it had been so long since someone had been mean to you based off your sexuality and the instant stinging came right back. turning around, you walked briskly down the hall but stopped in your tracks when you heard a loud crash behind you.
one of the boys were on the ground, bleeding from their nose and lip. soon after, another one of his friends joined him on the ground to moan and groan in unison. the others walked away, deeming it not worth the pain.
that's when you saw him - billy. he was wearing a white t-shirt, his eyes set ablaze with anger.
"what the fuck, billy?" one of the guys on the ground asked. "sticking up for the queer?"
billy grabbed the boy up by his collar and pushed him against the lockers.
"would you call me that? huh?" he said, pushing him harder. the metal of the lockers were sure to be digging deep into the kid's back. you stood dumbstruck, not moving but watching the scene unfold before you.
"what?" the kid asked, clearly confused.
billy looked down the hall at you, making instant eye contact. you shook your head no, telling him silently that he didn't have to do this. he didn't have to out himself to protect you.
he turned back to the boy before letting go and taking a few steps back. turning in a circle, he looked at the crowd around him. after doing a full 360 turn, he started to walk towards you, everyone's eyes following his movements.
his hands went on either side of your face, your lips connecting quickly and softly to his. you knew that the crowd watching were probably whispered or laughing, but you couldn't bring yourself to hear them. all your heard was the thumping of you heart.
"i missed you," you said once disconnecting from him.
he smiled, placing a quick kiss against your lips again before turning to look down the hallway filled with shocked kids.
"remember that every time you call y/n a name, you're calling me a name. do you really want to do that?" he asked the crowd, clearing knowing what everyone's answers would be. without waiting for a response, he took your hand, intertwined your fingers, and headed down the hallway.
