fear
— the unpleasant emotion
when we know we'll be facing
the unknown

the unknown,
or maybe the "not-so-unknown"
because we were filled
with repressed awareness of the possibilities.

when I was young
I was scared of the dark
and treated it as an enemy.
I bet we all did

I was also scared
of the sounds made in the dark
the inaudible shuffling
and that slight cluttering noise

but as I got exposed to the light
things changed,
drastically.
almost unbelievably

darkness didn't worry me anymore,
the light did
noise was no longer the enemy,
it was silence

I would be held responsible
for every idle word and
for all the moments of silence.
I needed noise to be a friend

I was liable in the light,
for every action was visible
every decision, every move
and everything that darkness once concealed

the uneasy feeling
was our comfort-zone
and staying in your room
will lead you to no destination

we all have irrational fears
but all of those masked us from the truth
and maybe
the truth does set us free

I once feared
darkness and noise.
but now,
it's accountability.
