Caroline's POV

"You what?"

"I may or may not have killed his entire family," Klaus states calmly once again, his eyes fixated on the road.

My jaw drops, "that's why Alexander wants to kill me?! Because you killed his family?!"

"He's been trying to find a weakness of mine for awhile. He's a planner, likes to strategize. That's why it's taken him so long to make a move," Klaus explains.

"Why'd you kill his family?" I frown, feeling sorry for him. I would want revenge against someone who did that to me too.

"I know what you're thinking and no, it wasn't like that. His mother hated my siblings and I, she thought we were monsters. She planned on killing us, even tried to cast a spell with her husband to kill Elijah and I one day. My siblings and I together were stronger, though. We killed them before they could kill us. We tried to make peace with them, Caroline. They didn't want it. It's just how it is," he sighs, seeming truly regretful about the subject.

I think deep down Klaus does want peace among everyone, but he just doesn't show it correctly. He uses violence to scare people away from him instead of dealing with them.

"They were witches?"

"Yes, powerful ones in fact. Alexander took the extremity of even putting himself into a vampire's body over the years so he could live long enough to kill my family like we did his. I'm afraid he's a witch again. That's why we had to get out of there. I didn't know what he was planning. If I hadn't shown up, Caroline... I could never deal with myself if anything happened to you."

"I know," I state, pressing a hand to his shoulder to attempt to comfort him.

Klaus is extremely protective, especially of me. Maybe it's because I'm human and he sees an innocence in me, but it doesn't matter. I feel safe around him, as odd as it sounds.

"What are you going to do?"

"I'm going to leave for a few days, hunt him down. I have to kill him, Caroline. He could kill you or Emily or my siblings any day and I can't allow that to happen. Elijah, Freya, and I are going together. Rebekah and Kol are going to stay at the house and protect you and Emily while I'm gone. I trust them. They'll keep you safe, love," Klaus's eyes flicker over to me as he takes in a sharp inhale before returning his gaze to the road.

"Why me, though? Why would he try to kill me and not one of your siblings? I mean, they certainly mean more to you than I do," I laugh it off to try to make myself less nervous about the fact Alexander could attack me any second.

Klaus pulls into the driveway, parking the car and turning to me.

"You, Caroline Forbes, are the most important thing to me right now. I don't care about them. I only care about you and your safety and making sure you're okay. That's all I'll ever care about, do you understand?"

I take in a breath, nodding, "I understand."

"Let's head in. My siblings are already inside," he opens the door and lets me walk in front of him to the front door.

"You don't have to kill him, Klaus," I stop him right before we enter.

He rolls his eyes as if I'm being idiotic, "it's the only way."

"No, it's not. You can talk with him, settle it all for good. He has a reason to be mad at you, to want to kill me. You killed his family, no matter what circumstance it was under. Wouldn't you do the same thing if you were in his shoes?" I ask.

Klaus sighs, trying to push past me. I press a hand to his chest, stopping him. He stands a few inches away from me, our bodies nearly touching from how close we are.

"You don't have to," I repeat.

"He'll kill you if I don't. I'm sorry, I just can't take that risk. We're going to kill him, and that's final," he states before opening the door, moving past me to do so.

I stand outside for a few moments, looking up at the stars before me. How did I ever get to this? I'm telling a thousand year old vampire not to kill some witch who almost killed me.

I laugh to myself, thinking about my old simple life. The one where I would go out and get drunk and return to my apartment with some random guy. I was as lonely as ever, and I hate to say it but Klaus provides some type of company that I never had before. He's a good person deep down, I know that, even if he goes completely mad sometimes.

I head inside, shivering from the cold night air. All eyes turn to me as I enter the grand living room where all of them stand. It turns silent.

"I'll start the locator spell. It'll only take a few minutes, then we can head out. I need complete silence though, so I'll be in the other room," Freya announces, ending the silence which I thank her for in my mind.

Klaus stands up, walking over to me as the others quietly discuss the plan amongst themselves.

"Will you be alright without me for a few days?" Klaus asks, half joking and half serious.

"Yeah, don't worry about me. I'm more worried about if you'll be okay," I tell him truthfully.

While he wouldn't be able to deal with if I were ever hurt, I wouldn't be able to deal with myself if he were ever hurt either. We've grown close to each other, I feel comfortable around Klaus. He's changed for the better, I suppose.

"I can't die, love," he smirks, his dimples showing.

I roll my eyes, "that doesn't mean he can't hurt you still. Look, just be safe, okay? Text me when it's over."

"I always am, aren't I?"

"Debatable," I laugh and he does as well.

I realize his siblings are watching us when I turn around, seeing their eyes on Klaus and I.

Klaus rolls his eyes, ignoring them as they quickly turn back to each other, embarrassed they had been caught.

"I know where he is," Freya rushes over to us, wiping away the blood from her nose.

"Are you okay?" Rebekah asks, standing up. The rest follow.

"I'm fine. Alexander was cloaked by another witch meaning he's not alone. It took a lot of my power to find him," she explains.

"Hey, maybe you should stay back with us. You don't look too good," Rebekah adds.

Freya shakes her head, "I'll recharge my power during the car ride. Nothing a little time can't heal. Plus, Klaus and Elijah will need a witch to take on Alexander and whoever else he has on his side. Come on, we have a long ride ahead of us."

"Where is he?" Elijah asks.

"New York," Freya answers.

"New York? That'll take a full day to drive there," Klaus replies angrily.

"It'll take longer if we don't hurry up. Get your stuff together, I'll be in the car," she announces like the older sister she is and heads out.

Klaus turns to me as Elijah begins to gather his wallet and cellphone.

"Call me tonight, okay?" Klaus asks to which I nod.

It's his turn to hug me, his embrace oddly comforting.

"Stay safe," he whispers, his eyes meeting mine before he pulls away.

"Nicklaus, we have to go," Elijah tells him.

He looks at me one more time before nodding to Elijah, the two of them flashing away in the blink of an eye.
