The beaming sun set over the horizon as we stepped out of the woods in complete silence. A gentle breeze twirled our hair as we walked down the rocky road, our footsteps the only sounds that echoed around us. I breathed in deeply but wrinkled my face in disgust at the stench of dried, brownish blood staining our clothes.
Clearing my throat, I caught the Heads attention. "What now?"
Her eyes softened and gazed at me with sympathy, and I noticed her beginning to fidget uncomfortably.
"I... I don't know, Emma," she said quietly. "We lost our map a long time ago — we-we're lost..."
My body shivered at the scared tone of her voice, and my legs instantly turned to jelly. We're lost. Those two, simple words replayed in my head and didn't leave no matter how hard I tried. I yearned for my loving parents, my home, my brother, my friends — but I may never see them again.
"Why?" My voice cracked and I fell to my knees, with my head resting in my hands.
"Why? Why? WHY?" A rush of tears flowed from my red eyes and dripped into the ground. The Head kneeled beside me and held me close to her body, trying to calm me but nothing worked. Tears, large, salty drops of water didn't stop falling.
"Emma! Emma! We'll get through this. Emma!"
I hiccupped and sniffed roughly, clutching the Heads jumper and wiping my face with it. She sighed but didn't say anything about it, much to my relief. My eyes were extremely sore and sensitive after having a breakdown in the middle of a road.
"Why... us. Why.. me?" I asked inbetween breaths.
"I don't know, it's just fate. Come on, let's carry on our journ-"
She stopped abruptly and whipped her her around, hitting me as she did so. I heard a gasp and sudden cry of joy which caught my attention. I jumped up and followed her stare, but was confused at seeing nothing. Just the trees and the road ahead.
"What!? What is it?"
"Look! On the road!"
I stared ahead again but saw nothing.
"I don't see it..?" A minute shadow came into view and I gasped quietly. It couldn't be. It was impossible.
The shadow grew bigger every second, and after a few moments the outline came visible. It seemed to be coming towards us at an incredible speed.
"What the..."
It became bigger and bigger until I saw the proper shape of it. It was a car!
"Oh my God!"
I fell backwards onto the ground in surprise, sending a shock of pain through my body. The Head stood still, her mouth in the shape of an 'O.'
We watched in astonishment as the car pulled up beside us and the window rolled down.
My eyes filled with tears, my stomach churned with homesickness, my vision blurred with happiness, my legs wobbled with surprise. Was this a dream?
"Emma?" She whispered, her voice cracking. I nodded vigorously, wiping the tears away that were already escaping. A sudden sob left my throat and broke the immense silence. The ground fell beneath me and I fell onto my knees, weeping.
"Oh Emma." She exited the car and wrapped her arms around my neck, squeezing me tightly. I cried into her fluffy jumper, resting my head against her chest as I bawled my eyes out. She seemed to ignore the crimson stains and ripped clothing I was wearing.
"W-w-we need... to leave," I sobbed inbetween breaths. She nodded, kissing my forehead and lifting me into the back seat of her car. I didn't put my seatbelt on, instead I watched her movements. Was this real?
The Head clambered into the passenger seat and relaxed in the leather chair, closing her eyes gently. She climbed into the drivers seat and shut the door, winding the window up.
"Let's get you home, tell us everything when we're there, ok?" She said, also wiping a tear that had escaped her own eye.
"Oh God, sorry. I missed you so much. I worried every second of the day." Another tear fell onto the leather chair. "Let's go home."
I nodded, sniffing vigorously.
"Yes mum."
