They started teaching us
to play games at such a young age.
Maybe that's why
when we're ready for something real,
we have no idea where to start. We're taught to play pretend
and to use our imagination
beyond the limitations of our society
but grow up to face a world
no kid would ever dream of.Little girls are talking for their barbies
but have no idea
how to talk for themselves.Little boys are battling mythical creatures
just to grow up
and not understand
that the dragons in their videos games
can't hurt us the way the real world can.I value that innocence.
I value the hope. But how are we expected to
grow up and pay the bills
when we're still thinking
about that one time the adults
told us pretending is okay.We can't pretend through life,
and that's the hardest thing to understand
because maybe
we're just a little too used to it.
