Needing a Job

"You what?" asked Nick.

"I uh need a job." I said.

Theo stood up from his chair and gave me a look. I knew what that look was, 'you didn't discuss that with me.'

"Why do you need a job? We're lazy ass teenagers still living off of our parents and not willing to exercise our forthcoming freedom and independence till our college years, we've never pretended to be anything else." said George.

Jessica looked at her like she was alien. "I got lost when you said ass." she snickered after saying ass. "Anyway, there's nothing wrong with a job. You'll get money to spend on what you what yiu want, independent of your parents input or nay-says."

We all gave her looks. "What?" she said, dipping her fingers into the jam jar and licking it. "I go to school, I can sound smart too."

I hugged myself and smiled a little. "I'm not getting a job for a money, that's just a bonus. Like George said, we're moochers." I laughed a little, then my eyes darkened. "I'm getting a job to get away from the devil incarnate my parents spawned in this very house. Summer is no fun with him around and now he's not going to college and i doubt he'll do anything worthwhile with his time. So i need something to get me out of this house. Its suffocating with him around anyway."

"Where have you been spending all previous summers? You know, if you've been trying to avoid him."

"At my place." started George. "You can just spend another summer with me Alex. It makes no difference."

"I'd rather die. No offence but I've spent four previous summers with you and your family. Your parent's patience is wearing thin. I can't continue doing that forever." I looked at her and the look on her face. "I love your place George." I tried to explain, "But i think I've overstayed my welcome there."

"What kind of job did you have in mind?" asked Nick.

That's the thing i hadn't given it any thought. I literally just thought of it! "Umm I don't know. I was thinking babysitting at first but I know now that Theo knows about this he'll want to come with me."

"I have to. You're not leaving me here with that mad man."

"Yeah so now I'm thinking maybe work in some company without a face that's modeled after a similar faceless company that does almost the same thing." I said.

"Y'all get real deep in this house, know that?" said Jessica.

"Comes with the life we were given, girlie." said Theo.

"How about a job at the mall? Maybe a food court or a nail salon?" said George.

"A nail salon?" Theo and I chorused, equal looks of disgust on our faces. "No thank you." Theo said.

"Do people even hire family members in the same place?" I asked

"Nope." said Nick simply. "But seeing how you two are inseparable, they'll have to now won't they?"

"Yes."  Theo and I chorused.

"We'll have to discuss this with Mum of course. Maybe at dinner." said Theo.

"I wonder what Toby will think about this." said George, more to herself than anyone else.

The thought silently echoed by everyone in the room...
