HUNTER CADWELL could only think of one thing. Scarlett was gone. His Scarlett. He would never see her smile again.
Six-year-old Scarlett ran to the edge of the park where her favorite oak tree laid and hid behind it.
Six-year-old Hunter chased after her and found her. He tenderly but playfully touched her shoulder saying, "Tag your it!"
Her smile turned into a pout, her eyes dimming.
"What's wrong, Scar?" He had asked her.
"Promise me that you will protect me and never leave me. That you will always be my best friend." She had said with her eyes shut.
"I will never leave you, Scar," He told her, lacing his fingers with hers.
Her shy smile was replaced by a devious grin and she started running over to the swings.
"Tag your it!" She screamed as he went on to chase her again.
A wave of guilt washed over him and instead of flowing back to the sea and momentarily passing, the guilt stuck. Something about that night seemed off and he knew it.
He had broken his promise. He didn't protect her, she was dead. In his eyes, he never left her, but she had left him. His heart shattered into a million pieces when his parents told him the news.
That his Scarlett was gone. His favorite incredible, clever, beautiful, curious, easygoing, stormy-eyed, brunette girlfriend was gone.
