DETECTIVE PRATT heard police sirens, radio chatter, but his mind had faded it out to where he could hardly hear it.
It was like everything was in slow-motion. He ran out of his police car and to the crime scene where he had been called to. He ducked under the 'CRIME SCENE DO NOT CROSS' tape and his mind only focused on one thing.
His eyes were glued to the body of Scarlett Hill.
The cloud had lifted and he shook his head, trying to grasp the situation. "Someone inform me what the hell happened right now!" He yelled to the officers that were at the scene.
"Seventeen-year-old female. 5'8. An officer was patrolling the woods and found her lying on the ground. He went to help her but she had no pulse. He called for backup and tried to revive her but it was unsuccessful," An officer told him handing him a file.
"Any leads on what the hell happened?" Detective Pratt asked the officer who handed him the file as he skimmed through it.
"Nobody else was at the scene when the officer first arrived. We are not sure of the cause of death yet, we will have to wait for the autopsy. Her shirt is all bloody. The paramedics are trying to find the source of the blood right now."
Detective Pratt nodded and dismissed the officer.
He closed his eyes, wanting to get rid of the image that was forever seared in his mind. He couldn't comprehend why she was dead, how this came to be. He didn't think it was suicide, she always seemed so happy. He just couldn't wrap his head around what could have happened to her.
There was something so mysterious about death. How in one second you can go from breathing to never taking a breath again. The mystery that surrounded the death came with lies and truths. Yet, there was something so poetic about death— something graceful about it yet so violent.
Scarlett Hill was every parent's dream. She was the poster child of Stonewalls, Virginia.
Who would want her dead?
