Coming Out

Coming out should be a heartfelt moment, it should be something memorable and an important date in your life.

When I came out to my dad, it was only two of those things. And it wasn't heartfelt.

The moments before you come out are probably the most suspenseful in your life, as was the case for me before I came out to my dad.

Now, my dad wasn't the 1st or the last person I'll come out too, but on that fateful day I had no intention of him learning my sexuality. It all started with a casual conversation between him and me about the Military Ball, which was to take place in about two days.

"So you got asked to the Military Ball by a chick, right?" My dad started.

The question took me by surprise, as we had been talking about my dress for said ball seconds beforehand, "Uhhh, yes sir?"

I was wary, where was he going with this?

He didn't even look up from his phone when he asked, "Are you going to kiss her?"

I nearly had a heart attack. "What?! Of course not! She's just a friend."

"What, is she not your type?" He asked incredulously.

I relaxed a little once I realized that he was joking, and that he didn't know that I actually do like girls. I decided to play along, thinking to myself, Why the hell not?

"Eh, not really."

He raised one eyebrow slightly, "Oh? Then what is your type, o'daughter of mine?"

I laughed, I couldn't believe that I was actually having this conversation with my dad. "Well~ I like athletic, blonde girls, that are close to my height."

Me and my dad were just playfully bantering like that, but my younger sister, Alyssa, must've mistook it as me actually coming out to dad.

She came sprinting down the hallway, shrieking the whole time. "OH MY GOD MEGAN DID YOU ACTUALLY DO IT I'M SO PROUD OF YOU AW OMG"

My dad just looked at me confused, I started sweating even worse at this point.

I had to explain myself, and fast, "Uhhh, actually Alyssa, I wasn't going to... But since we're here, I guess there's no time like the present, right?"

I awkwardly laughed and rubbed the back of my neck, looking anywhere but at my dad and sister. My eyes dragged over the kitchen, the white cabinets, the metal dishwasher, the black stovetop. With a gulp, I gathered the courage to look my father in the eyes and just, say it.

"Dad, I'm bisexual. I like girls and boys."

Omg I actually just did that holy SHI-- wait dad's saying something, OH GOD THIS WAS A MISTA-

"Really?" he kinda tilted his head to the side, "I was just joking that whole time, but... Wow. You know, now that you mention it, it was kind of obvious."

I gaped in shock, my sister was slightly laughing.

"W-what do you mean 'it's kind of obvious'?!" I asked him, not expecting the reaction I'd got.

"I mean, you wear way too many flannels to be straight-"

"Are you freaking kidding me?"

But that was just my dad being... well, being dad.

I'm really grateful for how accepting my family has been of me. If only everyone reacted like them, then the world would be a little bit better.

Bonus:
"So you like options, huh?" My dad said to me after coming out as bisexual.

I groaned, but I was happy. Stifling a laugh, I replied, "Well I guess that's a benefit?"

The three of us let out our laughter, and there were many more bi jokes made before the day's end.
