A few days had past of casually talking to Calum at lunch and making awkward eye contact in English before Ms. Clark had asked me a question on Romeo and Juliet, “Ebony can you please tell the class one quotes that is used in act1 scene5?” I stared blankly at her for a few moments until a small mouse like squeak left my mouth. ‘Think Ebony think!’ I thought to myself as my heart began to race. After another strange look from Ms. I heard Calums voice from the back of the room, “Juliet had said- My only love sprung from my only hate, Too early seen, unknown, and known too late, “ “Thank you Calum,” Ms. Clark praised the boy who I could see becoming her golden student. I was stuck in a daze as he had that same passion in his voice that he had the first time I heard him talking about Romeo and Juliet, he really loved that stupid drama. I shot him a thankful smile for saving my ass. For the remainder of the class I could feel Calums eyes boring into to the back of me, strangely this was never an uncomfortable feeling.

As I was leaving English to head for the lunch room I felt a strong hold on my right arm, Calum. “Wait for me!” he said. I did as he said and within a second he was at my side. He was laughing for some unknown reason, “what?” I questioned the tan boy. “Please let me help you study Romeo and Juliet,” he continued to laugh as I told him I didn’t need help studying. “Oh please did you not see me saving your ass in there!” he almost shouted, “shut up I just forgot the quote!” I retorted. Of course I didn’t know the quote, or any of the quotes for that matter but I sure as hell was not gonna let Calum know that. I thought for a moment about the fact that this drama was worth almost fifty percent of my grade for English class and I needed to study it if I wanted to pass. He gave me a questioning look before I nodded my head, “what?” he asked, “I’ll let you help me study, but only because I need to pass this class.” I told him. I turned around to head for lunch but heard him chuckling behind me. Lunch always seemed to pass to quickly, but I had learned a lot about Calum over the last few days thanks to our lunch break. His birthday was January 25th, he was 18 and has a sister. I never spoke much about myself even though Calum insisted on asking a million and one questions, but to be honest I didn’t have much to tell him. My birthday was February 1st, I was an only child. My parents had normal jobs, my mom, Michelle was a social worker, she loved baking but never made a career out of it and my dad, Christian was a business man for some advertising company, he was most definitely a writer at heart but both him and mom said writing wouldn’t pay the bills. I loved my dad’s writing, he mostly wrote poems but they were some of the most beautiful things I had ever read.

The next couple of days were spent at Calums house or the library after school trying to study Romeo and Juliet. I preferred being in Calums house, his family were so welcoming and kind but weren’t suffocating. They would say hello and ask how our day was but then leave us be to study. I definitely was not having Calum in my house any time soon. I never really brought people over and I didn’t even know if Calum and I were friends or if he was just helping me study so I didn’t fail English?

As much as I enjoyed Calums company, studying was getting extremely boring. “Can we take a little break?” I asked Calum softly, “Sure,” he replied with a large grin on his face. Before I knew where we were going I was at the door of Calums room, “we can just listen to music for a while if you want,” he said while opening the door. I stepped into Calums room and found myself almost lost for breath. I had never in my life thought that a room could portray a person so perfectly. This room made me feel like I knew Calum on a much deeper level. The walls were stripped back to the natural, old, dark red brick of the houses structure.  *This was the way I had always pictured the walls of my future apartment*. His bed was huge, definitely a double but probably larger I presumed. The bed sheets were plain grey. His bed was unmade and I could almost see the imprint of where he has slept the night before. I looked around to see a large book case which reminded me of the one in my own room, this thought made me smile. My fingers found their way to an old blink 182 cd as they were trailing over the many books and cd’s that filled the shelves. I soon spotted Calums extra copy of Romeo and Juliet. My eyes left his book case and made their way to the posters on his walls. They were mostly filled with old band posters but I also spotted a few drawings, “you draw?” I questioned sounding to surprised. He chuckled lightly before giving me a bare answer “a little, only sometimes,” he said quietly. I saw an uneasy look on his face, letting me know not many people had ever seen his art work, “you do know there really good right?” I asked him and his eyes brightened slightly. “Do you really think so?” he asked still sounding a bit uneasy, “yes of course, they’re amazing Calum!” he just smiled and gave me a soft thank you. His desk was messy, with torn up pages from his sketch pad and a variation of pens and pencils, you could tell he spent a lot of time in here. The floor of his room was wooden and had a slightly dirty, worn look to it probably because of age. His wardrobe doors were opened slightly and I could see a scruffy black and white flannel shirt hanging out, I made a mental note about how I couldn’t wait to see him wearing it. As my eyes drifted around the room once more they focused on the black bass hidden in the corner of the room. “You play the bass?” I questioned not sounding as surprised but more intrigued. “Yeah,” he said sounding a lot more confident with his smile beaming, “Would you play for me?” I asked shyly, he gave me a questioning look before standing up a grabbing his instrument. “Really?” he questioned to assure himself I wasn’t making fun of him, “please,” I asked with a smile growing on my face at the sight of him warping the strap around his body. I looked down at the floor to hide my smile but when my head snapped back up my smile began to grow as I saw his large hands begin to grasp the strings of his bass. Before I knew what was happening the chords to Arabella by the arctic monkeys began to swiftly fill the room, this was one of my favourite songs and I had the pleasure of sitting here and having it played to me. My smile grew too large for me to contain and as Calum noticed his grew in unison with mine.

Calums pov

My hands were shaking as I picked up my bass, what was I doing I didn’t usually play for anyone but in the back of mind I knew I was happy to play for Ebony. I quickly remembered her telling me she liked the arctic monkeys so my fingers began to play the song I knew best, Arabella. I glanced up to see the brightest smile I had ever seen illuminating from her face. Her smile was so beautiful that I nearly lost what chord I was on, I quickly recovered not wanting to have to explain why I forgot the chords. I focused on the song for a few moments before looking up again to find her body swaying slightly as she sat on my bed. I ended up playing a few more songs and even teaching her some chords before she left for the night.
