I'm in the waiting room of the doctor's office. The chair is cold against my thighs, and the smell of disinfectant is making me sick. Mom keeps glancing over me, like she thinks I'll explode at any second. This strange look has been on her face ever since I had that little slip-up.
"Skye Ossen?" a woman annouces. She has dark rimmed glasses that sit on the tip of her greasy nose. It looks like they might just slide off any second. Her brown hair is pulled back in a bun, and it looks like her face hasn't shown a smile in 20 years. I get off the chair and follow her into a dark room. As she flicks on the lights I notice a name tag. Nurse Avril it says.
"Hello, my name is Nurse Avril. I'm just going to do some check-up tests on you before Doctor Taylor comes in.
"My middle name is Avril." I say warmly. She looks at me over her glassed and manages an "Mhmm." then she turns to a table and puts a long sheet of paper over it. I don't know why doctors always do that.
She instructs me to sit down and I hop up. She grabs a stethoscope and turns my body around. Her gloved hand snakes up the back of my shirt and presses the metal into my back. It is ice cold. I suck in my breath at the sudden change in temperature. She doesn't seem to notice, just takes the stethoscope back and scribbles a note on her clipboard. She shines a light in my ears and eyes, and takes my blood pressure. After soundlessly writing a few more notes on a clipboard, she presses a button and says
"Doctor Taylor, Skye Ossen is ready to see you." then with the sound of her high heells echoing through the empty white room, she walks out the door and leaves.
I wait. 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 15 minutes, 20 minutes. I keep checking the clock that sits on the wall. After a while its ticking becomes really annoying, and I am itching to get up and do something. I almost do, but as soon as my toes graze the floor, I hear footsteps. I hurry right back on. A lady with light blonde hair walks into the room and gives me a warm smile. Finally a nice doctor.
"Hello Skye! I'm doctor Taylor! Nurse Avril has told me that all your vital signs are right. So I'm just going to ask you a couple questions." I nod and she starts quizzing me on when I first started seeing the "illusions", what the "illusions" were like, boring stuff like that. She keep calling Echo and my other friends "illusions" It is sickening. I respond by calling them friends. After more notes on a clipboard, she walks out of the room to talk to my mother. I am getting really suck of these clipboards. After a long time the doctor comes in and says
"We are going to do an MRI. That is where a big machine with magnets takes pictures of your brain. Please come in tomorow." she says this to me like I was a preschooler, her eyes wide open, and each word carefully articulates. So I get up, and leave. I was coming back tomorrow anyways.
