Chapter 34 / Blake's P.O.V
Lydia and I take her car, which annoys me because I could have driven myself. I let Laurel take the day off. The entire car ride is thick with silence. I keep checking my phone, hoping for a message that never comes. What did I do wrong?
We arrive at the care center where Dustin is. I insist Lydia stay in the car, but she tries to procrastinate. I strap her seatbelt back in place, giving her a glare, but she just scoffs. I remind her that this place is personal to Olive and that Olive would kill me if Lydia knew about it. I keep the details vague, just saying it's special and personal. If Lydia doesn't understand, maybe Olive shouldn't be with her, though I hope otherwise.
I walk through the double white doors and check the sign-in sheet. Olive's name is there, but she hasn't signed out. Is she still here? Near the entrance, a nurse coughs to get my attention, motioning for me to come closer.
"I know who you are. You've been here with Miss Mencher before, but there was a family incident. You shouldn't be here—" she starts but is cut off.
"You!" A woman who looks like an older version of Olive storms towards me.
I barely recognize her, but she doesn't seem happy to see me. She slaps me hard across the face. What's with people slapping me? Have I made that many enemies?
"Miss, I need you to step back now," the nurse intervenes.
"You turned my daughter gay! Do you think your magazine stunt shows God that He approves of your sins? You've ruined my daughter, made her into a disgusting person," she sneers.
"Well, this is a lovely first meeting with the parents," I laugh, brushing myself off. "The language you're using is vile. I don't usually hate parents, but you might be the worst. Are you stuck in your Gen X world? Get with the times. The LGBTQ+ community is a family that supports each other, unlike you."
"Watch your tone, young lady. Respect your elders!" she yells.
"Screw my elders!" I shout back, then feel a hand on my shoulder. I turn to see Lydia. "You were supposed to stay in the car," I hiss.
"Well, I couldn't resist watching the chaos and seeing your career go down the drain. Look around, there are cameras everywhere. If this scene gets out, you're finished. Let's get out of here." Lydia tries to pull me away, but I yank my arm free.
Before I can continue, Olive's mother walks away. Suddenly, a tall man blocks my path, and I stumble back. Why couldn't I be that tall? Maybe then I could have made it in the fashion industry. Instead, I'm stuck in the film industry, and I'm not even doing well. I have to find Olive today; I don't want to leave tomorrow to finish my movie.
"I'm Mr. Mencher, Olive's father. She probably hasn't mentioned us much. I assume you know why you're here. First, I apologize for my wife's behavior..."
"I don't understand why you married her in the first place," I mutter, but he hears. Lydia smacks my shoulder, and I quickly apologize.
"Anyway, Olive isn't here anymore. There was an incident, and she stormed off. We have serious family issues right now, and I'm asking you to stay out of it," he says, extending his hand for a handshake.
