Word of the Day:

Saudade (n.): A nostalgic longing to be near again to something or someone that is distant or that has been loved and then lost; "the love that remains."

Blake never makes it to my place, and I call her repeatedly throughout the night, but there is no response. I start to worry and want to check on her, but I don't want to intrude on her family matters. Who knows what might have happened? I cry the whole night, dreading the court trial, but knowing it's for the best. I just want comfort, but Blake isn't there to provide it. She hasn't even let me know if she'll make it to the trial.

I finally rest my eyes at four in the morning, only to wake up at seven to prepare for the trial. Pierre, Nova, and Blake are supposed to meet me at my house before heading to the courthouse, but I'm uncertain if Blake will show up. The night passes quickly, and when I wake up, it feels like I'm still dreaming. Everything is spinning, and I feel nauseous, but I can't afford to get sick today. I have to hold it together.

I brew coffee and check my phone for any messages or calls from Blake, but there is nothing. She promised she would be here today. By eight o'clock, Pierre and Nova arrive, hand in hand. I smile but frown, disappointed that it's not Blake.

"Sorry we're not who you were expecting," Pierre laughs.

"Blake's gone MIA. She won't even answer her phone," I mumble while pouring coffee for the three of us.

"I'll try calling her," Nova says softly, stepping outside to make the call.

I start getting ready, dressing in professional clothing to appear presentable in court. Pierre sips his coffee in the kitchen while I button my white blouse, slide into black pants, and put on medium-length heels. As I apply makeup, I notice the bags under my eyes and curse the crying and lack of sleep.

A knock at the door makes me mess up my mascara. I turn to see Nova shaking her head, indicating Blake didn't answer. She left a couple of voicemails. I thank her weakly and finish my makeup. I want to cry again, missing Blake's comforting presence. We're not a couple, but she means a lot to me.

Why would Blake go missing after everything we've been through? Is she scared? I'm terrified too, but maybe she left because she didn't want to deal with me. I need Blake but have to rely on my other friends.

I walk out of the bathroom, defeated, and lay on my bed, sinking into it. Needing support, I scroll through my contacts and call Blake again. The phone rings once, twice, three times... nothing. I shut my eyes tightly, wishing the pain would go away.

I decide to call someone else, someone I haven't spoken to in a week or two. The line connects in three seconds, and I feel my breath hitch.

"Lydia," I breathe.

"Olive? You sound distant. What's wrong? Where have you been?" she asks immediately, something clattering in the background.

"Y-yeah . . . I'm fine," I say, feeling a tear slip down my left cheek. I quickly wipe it away. "I was wondering if you could come over before nine. I have some explaining to do," I mumble, my voice cracking.

"I'll be there in ten minutes," she reassures me.

"Oh, and dress decently, please," I remind her, considering I'm taking her to court with me. She hangs up, and I can tell she's rushing over.
