Chapter 1 / Olive's P.O.V

Sitting at a desk for extended periods, engaged in laborious work, can become quite demanding. It's commonly said that maintaining focus for the entirety of such tasks is nearly impossible without taking a few breaks. Socializing, supposedly, enhances one's chances of finding happiness and fending off negativity—though that's certainly up for debate.

In school, the grind can extend to six or seven hours of studying. Often, it feels unnecessary as the brain simply shuts down. It's exhausting, and students are forced to rise earlier than many adults, which feels somewhat patronizing. High school experiences are universally acknowledged to be challenging.

University life offers more flexibility in scheduling classes, which I find notably easier to manage. At twenty-three, nearing the end of my education and on the cusp of starting my career, there's a certain satisfaction in the journey. Yet, here I am, stuck in my condo awaiting responses from internship applications.

Exhaling, I ran a hand through my hair, feeling the weight of stress. My roommate was perpetually occupied elsewhere, leaving the place feeling persistently lonely. Our condo, not too large or small, provided enough space for our separate rooms and a cozy living area that flowed into the kitchen.

I shifted my Mac laptop off my crossed legs and stretched my body across the white leather couch. Letting out a strange groan, I finally allowed my body to relax, bringing a rare moment of silence until my stomach rumbled with hunger.

"Food..." I mumble.

I pushed myself up from the couch and headed into the kitchen, rummaging through cabinets and cupboards to see what culinary creation I could muster. This time, I swung open the fridge—success. A head of lettuce, some fresh turkey slices, and a jar of mayonnaise caught my eye. I grabbed each item, opting to leave the lettuce behind to keep the sandwich as simple as possible. Looks like this will be my dinner for tonight.

My roommate, Maya, had promised to bring something back for me since she was heading out with friends, but it was already eleven at night. It seemed she had forgotten, but right on cue, as I was assembling my sandwich, the door burst open. I didn't even flinch; I knew what kind of evening this was shaping up to be.

Maya stumbled into the room with a few more people trailing behind, all seemingly struggling to maintain their balance. They erupted into raucous laughter, their eyes eventually landing on me.

"Olive!" Maya's squeal pierced my ears. "I missed you! And I'm not sure if you've met my friends before. This is Camila, Adrian, and Mary Jane."

I tuned out their names, not really caring. I kept making my sandwich until the lettuce slipped from my hand and hit the floor. Maya leaned over my shoulder, peering to see what I was doing, but her expression quickly soured as she realized her oversight.
