I N A R I | CHAPTER FOUR |

4 | arguing

"WHAT HAPPENED, INARI?" Raine asked, her eyebrows furrowed in concern and care.

"I don't even know," I replied shakily while pushing my glasses up the bridge of my nose. I was still a bit shaken up after the encounter with Mr. Moretti.

"Did he threaten you? Because if he did then I will not hesitate to beat him up with my emergency baseball bat, I've got people who can help hide the bod-" I cut off Raine before she could finish her threat.

"No Raine, you don't understand. That man out there? He's Xavier Moretti, as in the Xavier Moretti," I explained with wide eyes and a beating heart. My heart skipped a beat just thinking about what Mr. Moretti could do to our tiny business. I brought my hand up to my wrist just to make sure I was still alive.

"As in one of the most powerful men in Europe? That Xavier Moretti? The Xavier Moretti that murdered his father in cold blood? The-" Raine was then cut off once again by a pair of heavy footsteps making their way towards our rapidly growing fearful bodies. Raine and I looked at each other in a suspenseful silence, waiting for our doom. I wonder what heaven looks like. Wait, I might not be going to heaven, there was that one time when I stole Cheri's money from her purse and bought all those lollipops- my thoughts were cut off by Betty's fearful voice.

Mr. Moretti was directly behind her with a proud gleam in his eyes. He was smiling with glee, that was the first time that I saw him smiling genuinely. Or it could have been a smirk, I really couldn't tell because it was very difficult to read him.

"Girls, pack your bags because I'm afraid today is the last day that we will be able to call ourselves employees of The Sweets Kingdom," Betty said hesitantly, her voice quivering at the end.

"Wait, you've got to be kidding me!" Raine yelled. Her face looked panicked, and when I made eye contact with her, tears were threatening to spill from her hazel eyes. Mr. Moretti still hadn't said anything, and when I looked over to him, his eyes held little to no remorse, although I could have been reading him wrong.

"Betty, what are you talking about?" I asked as calm as I could, although I could hear my voice cracking towards the end of my sentence. I used my index finger to push my glasses up, then dropped my hand back down creating a small sound as it hit my thigh.

"She means I am shutting down your little cafe," Mr. Moretti explained before Betty could answer.

"What? Do you have a reason as to why you are shutting us down?" I asked directing my whole body to face Mr. Moretti and giving him my full attention, I was prepared to argue until my dying days. Even though I was sure he could feel my nervousness, The Sweets Kingdom was my home, my sanctuary and I wasn't about to let it slip from my fingertips that easily. I spent most of my time here, other than school. You could say I practically lived here.
