~Irene's POV~
You know, being a vampire and a witch in modern times was much easier than in olden times. Nowadays, you heard teachers lecture about the Salem Witch Trials, and the students acted like it was a horrid thing to do. It was also much easier to get away with wearing all black and not talking to anyone, it was a style now. I walked into school, my head down as my sunglasses were pushed as far up on my nose as they could go. It was the first day of my sophomore year. I watched as each and every girl gushed about the new Dusk movie, all about vampires and forbidden love, all overdramatized and ridiculous. I turned, seeing one of the freshman hitting on every person with breasts and lungs. I shook my head at his antics, hoping he might learn. "Hey, hot stuff," he smirked, winking at a junior as she passed by. His friend hit him on the arm, "Dude!"
"What?" I quickly squeezed my eyes shut, trying to block out the chatter. I still hadn't managed to control most of my heightened senses since I'd been turned, but the likely culprit was the blood substitute. It probably didn't soothe me as much as real blood could. My ears pricked up at the sound of a familiar voice, "Ah, hey, Principal Hicks, let me give you a hand!" I turned, seeing Jesse, who was now a senior, moving to take the coffee from Hicks' hands. "Oh, thank you, Jesse. Much better!"
"Anything for our fearless leader," he smiled, but he wasn't looking at Hicks. No, he was looking at me. "Do you mind?" he asked, stealing a sip of Hicks' coffee. "Ah, french roast..." he sighed. "French roast," Principal Hicks mumbled. "Good choice," Jesse smiled, handing the coffee over. "Good choice," Principal Hicks said absently, holding onto the coffee lightly. Jesse turned to me, throwing me a wink. He still couldn't leave me be, it seemed. Hicks turned to watch Jesse walk away and then back to the two freshmen who were staring. "Boys in the drama club," Hicks said chuckling, "always making a scene." I turned, walking away quickly with my books clutched to my chest.
Sadly, I ended up behind the two freshmen in the lunch line. I carefully slid my books to one hand and grabbed a clean tray before setting it on the metal next to the shorter one's. "Benny, this is it. Our whole future social lives could depend on how we behave here the next few days, so..." The taller one, Benny, turned, wearing the most ridiculous goggles, "What do you think?"
"Benny!" the other said quickly, snatching them off his head. "Those are state of the art alien DNA detector goggles!"
"Yeah, so?" the shorter shot back. "High school cafeteria is an ideal place to test them out."
"Yeah, and to brand us as dorks for the next four years!"
"If there were aliens, they'd most likely be smarter than to pick a high school cafeteria to hide out in. High schoolers are annoying," I scoffed under my breath, noticing both boys turn to face me. "J-Just give me the goggles," Benny stuttered, noticing the shorter smirk in agreement with my comment. "No. You promise to be cool?" Another kid farther up in line interrupted their conversation, "Hey, you guys! Hey, over here!"
"Oh no," Benny sighed. "The three amigos ride again. Any of you guys got a buck twenty-eight?" He questioned, still yelling in front of everyone. "Ugh, okay, that's it. I'm getting away from you guys or I'm doomed to be-" He was interrupted as he dumped his delicious sloppy joe down the front of some girl's shirt. "Ah! Dork! Thank you so much!"
"That is one babe-tastic tower of Babe-alon," Benny sighed, having returned his glasses to his face. I scoffed, grabbing my half-empty tray and moving to my table I usually sat at alone. I sat there for a few minutes, watching the clock tick away when the three guys from earlier walked up. "Do you mind if we sit? Every other table doesn't have enough seats for all three of us."
"You want to be branded an outcast and a dork?" I smirked. "We kinda need someplace to eat at least." I chuckled, gesturing to the three seats, "Go ahead." Jesse suddenly made his way into my peripheral vision, and then he was directly heading my way. I sighed, watching him lean down to whisper to me, "My Queen, can I speak with you. I've figured out how to get our flock back."
