The scent of coffee danced in the air, the heavenly aroma hitting your senses as soon as you stepped foot in Anteiku, a coffee shop in town that you frequented often. It's quaint atmosphere and friendly staff kept you coming back—and the coffee, of course. You took a seat at a corner table and your favorite waiter, Taehyung, approached just moments after you sat down, a bright smile on his face as he headed over to you.
"Hey." He greeted enthusiastically with that contagious and gleaming grin of his.
"Hey." You gave him a small wave. "How are you?"
"I'm good. Things are better since we talked last."
"That's good to hear." You smiled.
Taehyung had been having a tough time. Last time you spoke with him, he was trying to adapt to some changes in his life which he was vague about, but you didn't mind. You weren't the type to pry for details or force someone to open up, which is why you let him tell you only what he was comfortable with.
"So, what can I get you today? The usual?" Taehyung inquired.
"Yes please."
"I'll be right back with that."
Taehyung stepped away and returned a couple short minutes later with a steaming cup of your usual coffee order. You thanked him as he pulled a chair out and took a seat across from you.
"I haven't seen you in a few weeks." He frowned, his voice taking on a disheartened tone.
"I know. Sorry about that. All these ghoul attacks lately have me feeling a bit nervous so I haven't bothered to leave the house unless it's necessary."
"Ah." He nodded understandingly. "Well, I know we texted each other, but nothing beats talking to you in person."
A gentle smile graced your features at his words. You reached for your beverage and took a small sip before setting it back down on the table."You know, there was just an attack a couple nights ago. It's scary." You murmured. "You can't even go out without the fear of being eaten."
Taehyung was quiet, adjusting the eyepatch he wore over his left eye. "Can I ask you something purely out of curiosity?"
Your heart rate picked up at the way he spoke, a small part of you hoping he was about to ask you on a date.
"Yes, of course. Anything."
"What do you think about ghouls?"
Ah.
You brushed aside your disappointment before responding.
"About ghouls?" You echoed.
He nodded in confirmation.
"They terrify me. They're heartless beings who have no compassion, remorse, or empathy."
Taehyung's demeanor shifted and he fidgeted in his seat a bit.
"Do you... think there are nice ghouls out there who maybe don't want to kill people?"
You hesitated in your response.
"I never really thought about it."
"Well, what do you think about it? Do you think there's ghouls out there that don't like what they do?"
"Hm. I suppose there probably are." You frowned a bit. "That's really sad. I can't imagine being forced to eat human flesh to survive and feeling so guilty for it."
"Yeah." He murmured in response.
