Prolouge
This is the story of my family. The Barns' family. I'm the third generation. My parents had me when my mom was twenty. She told me about her experience when she was sixteen, and that was why she was so scared for me. She was scared that I would be just like her and Grammy. Everything taken from me at sixteen. But I highly doubted that would happen to me.
My sixteenth birthday was coming up. As each day neared, my parents hovered me even more. I felt smothered. They kept watching me everywhere I went. They watched me get on the bus, they met me at the bus after school, they drove me to the places I wanted to go, and picked me up. They made me tell every detail of my day to them every single day. And the weekends were sometimes worse. If I didn't go anywhere, they hovered, asking who I was talking to.
I had no social life whatsoever, because of them. Anytime I tried to make a friend, they interrogate the person. Which was why, I'd leave out some details every day I came home from school. The only freedom I had was work. And they even showed up there, sometimes. I worked at this bookstore. I was the counter lady. People in school called me "Book Girl."
What was really sad, though, was whenever I said my last name, everyone flipped out. The family name was huge and well known. I wanted to move. I wanted to go somewhere, where no one had ever heard of my family. It was embarrassing to go to a place and have people make speculations about you. Some would whisper and point. Some guys tried to hook up with me, because of it.
I didn't have the best life. It sure felt like the worst life, ever. I mean, I love my family, but when they hovered over me, it made me feel like they didn't trust me. Anytime I said that, they gave me the same answer: "We do trust you, honey. We just want you to have a good life without having to worry about getting raped by someone." I'll say it again, they smothered me. And I was so tired of it. My birthday was only just a handful of days--two days--away, and I couldn't even imagine what they would plan!
