A week after the unfortunate incident in the garden, you were relieved that things around the Happy Hotel became more redundant. It was almost tranquil except for the afternoon when you stumbled upon Vaggie yelling at Angel for his shenanigans, who just leaned back against the bench without a care. He owed a favor to an old friend which the spider claimed was a 'redeeming quality' that Charlie emphasized the hotel's guests to engage themselves in. But the manager wasn't buying the excuse; his idea of 'help' did not include starting a turf war and subsequently territorial genocide.
Angel laughed. "Eh, what can I say? Ya win some, you lose a few hundred!" He casually examined his gloved hands as he ignored Vaggie's bitching until he noticed you were standing there, watering can in one hand and your tail cradling a gardening kit.
"Need something hun? You seem like ya do," Angel asked with a sly smirk, his golden tooth jutting over his bottom lip. Blinking and realizing you were in fact staring at them with a vacant expression, you calmly shook your head and slithered away. Your reaction earned a sigh from Vaggie and a low chuckle from the drug addict.
Despite their constant bickering, you were able to tell the former was only looking out for the spider demon, even if she did it in a harsh way. And while their interactions with you were limited while on the clock, at least they respected you enough to take the conversation elsewhere so you could work.Once the pair you released the breath you didn't realize you were holding. Granted there were far worse things to interrupt than a squabble between the two demons yet...was it too much to ask to have your afterlife be somewhat peaceful after the shit you'd done? Oh, right. This is Hell. Fat chance of that happening.
Shaking your head, you carefully placed the kit down onto the ground and looked around. You raised an eyebrow. That's odd. Usually he would be here by now. Of course, you were referring to the peculiar, smiling deer. No one really took the effort or the patience to have a conversation with someone who could not talk except for Husk, the vulgar cat demon who was almost always intoxicated even before the bar opened.
You shrugged, slithering towards a medium-sized African Strangler with the watering can, aiming the spout towards the roots while batting its attempts to 'hug' you with your tail. Maybe he got tired of kicking around a tennis ball or 'speaking' to me. Oh well, it was nice to have company while it lasted.
That was how the rest of the morning went. Trimming the rose hedges, harvesting strange-colored fruits that the chef wanted to add for tonight's main dish, and removing trash that the hotel guests tried to hide around the area. Needles, cigarette butts, and used condoms.
Eventually your shift ended and after placing the equipment back in the tool shed, you plopped down on the bench. Your gaze shifted from left to right, feeling a little more downtrodden than earlier when there still wasn't any sign of the deer. You figured that it must have other things to do in this shithole, surviving whatever obstacles a deer has to overcome. Yet as you sat here by yourself in a tranquil area you were proud to have created...you were surprisingly lonely.
Because no matter what time of the day it had been, the deer seemed to have always made an effort to visit you, nuzzling its nose against your scales and somehow being able to read your expressions or what you were trying to convey without speaking.
What to do, what do? Time seems to be moving so slowly now, maybe because...oh who am I kidding. The deer isn't coming here so I might as well clock out and go to the lobby bar for a drink. Maybe Husk will play a few rounds of poker before - Huh? Lifting your tail up in the air, your gaze fell upon a letter that was stuck to the aforementioned appendage.
