"Max. Come on get up." Dustin pleaded. Max buried her face deeper into the pillow she was holding. She was at the Byers House. Ever since the fight between her and Mike, they've been ready to slash each other's throats everytime they're near each other. She didn't want it to be back to them fighting again, but what he said was wrong. And it really hurt Max. Whether he knew it or not, it did hurt her. It hurt her a lot.
"Max, it'll be fine. El has switched to being home schooled by her aunt. She won't be coming back to school. Besides, El was probably messing with Mike's head when he said those things. Max turned her head to face them.
"He said the kiss meant nothing to him." She sobbed. She turned her head back into the pillow. She continued to sob.
"Wait. When and why did you guys kiss?" Will asked. Max sat up. She held the pillow in her arms. She held her legs up to her chest.
"Mike felt bad for being an ass to me. So he wanted to make it up. I told him to get us tickets to Sometimes They Come Back, and he did. We watched the movie, and we ended up going to the diner after to eat. After that he drove back to his house, and we kissed in the car. I didn't intend on it being an actual date, it just happened. And I didn't mean to actually start falling for him. I just did. It just happened." Max explained. Will and Dustin looked at each other.
"Oh, that explains why Mike was different today." They both said. Max raised an eyebrow.
"What?" Max asked. Dustin smirked.
"Mike was trying to impress you today. He was wearing a leather jacket and apparently over the weekend taught himself to skate like Tony Hawk." Dustin told Max. She sighed. The door opened. Joyce ran in with some bags of stuff. She saw Max. She sat down beside her.
"Will told me everything. Now, I know that when you're heartbroken it feels like end of the world. But I got you some stuff to make you feel better. I got milk chocolates, ice cream, a teddy bear, makeup, hair supplies,  and nail polish. Because every girl wants to show the guy what they're missing out on." Joyce told Max. Max looked at all the stuff.
"What do we do?" Dustin asked Joyce. The phone rang. Max stood up.
"I'll get it." She told everyone. She answered the phone.
"Hello?" Max asked. Max heard heavy breathing coming from the other end.
"Max, i- it's me, Mike. I need help." Mike pleaded. Max crossed her arms.
"Oh really?" Max asked in a sarcastic tone. Mike coughed.
"Max, I know you're mad at me. I- I'm sorry. B- but Lucas jumped me when I was on my way home. I'm pretty sure I broke my leg. Get help." Mike whispered. Max raised an eyebrow.
"Why are you whisp-" Max heard a scream on the other end. And another one.
"I'm sorry Lucas! Stop!" Mike howled. A loud smack and snap could be heard. Max gasped.
"Mike? Mike?!" Max asked. Her mind started racing.
"I'm by the gas station. Please Max, I'm sorry. I'm so sorry about what I said. I wasn't thinking. Max, I didn't mean anything I said to El, I swear! I love you Max!" Mike said. Max' jaw dropped slightly.
"What?" Max asked.
"I love you Max. M- More than anything. I thought I knew what it was like to love someone. But, I was wrong. But ever since you came over and watched movies with me to help me get over El cheating on me, I realized what it is truly like to be in love with someone. Max, I'm so sorry. Please, just get some help." Mike pleaded. Max gulped.
"I'm on my way. I'll get Joyce to call the hospital. Don't move." Max told Mike.
"I love you Mike." Max said.
"I love you too Max." Mike replied. Max smiled slightly. She hung up the phone.
"Alroght, Dustin, Will! Come with me! Lucas jumped Mike and now Mike is seriously hurt. Joyce, I need you to call the hospital." Max told everyone. Joyce picked up the phone. Max was about to walk out the door when Will spoke.
"Max, where are your pants?" Will asked. Max looked down. She huffed.
"I'm wearing shorts! The shirt is oversized! Now come on!" Max yelled. Will and Dustin ran out. Max got on the back of Will's bike. The boys got on the bikes and they peddled quickly down to the main roads. They quickly reached the gas station Mike talked about. Max gasped. She saw Mike a couple feet down at the side of the building. They all got off the bikes. Lucas was still there.
"YOU SON OF A BITCH! YOU DESERVED IT! YOU HURT MAX! AND I WANT YOU TO FEEL WHAT IT FELT LIKE FOR HER!" Lucas was yelling at Mike. Mike was crying. He was holding his right leg. Max ran over.
"What the hell Lucas?!" Max yelled. Dustin and Will grabbed Lucas by his arms. They pulled him back.
"What is wrong with you? WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?!" Max bellowed. Minutes later, Joyce's car showed up. Max looked at Mike. His left eye was swollen and looked like a black eye. He had a bunch of deep scratches on his hands and elbows. His lip was busted open really bad. His nose was bleeding slightly. He had bruises all over. Max turned his head gently towards her. Mike saw her. He grabbed her hand gently. Max grabbed his hand in return.
"You came." Mike rasped. Max let a few tears fall. She nodded her head.
"Yeah. Of course I did. I told you I would." Max replied. Mike winced slightly as he tried sitting up better. An EMT truck came about 10 minutes later. The doctors put Mike on a stretcher. Mike winced. His breathing was shallow and quick. They put an oxygen mask on his face. Max stood a few feet away. She walked over to the stretcher and held Mike's hand.
"Hey, you'll be okay. I know it." Max told Mike. Mike coughed.
"Promise?" Mike asked. Max smiled and nodded her head.
"Promise."
