::Kylie's POV::
I could feel the beads of sweat forming on my forehead. Nervousness was a complete understatement. I was flat out, undeniably terrified.
"Okay. When we call you guys in, we'll ask you a few questions, you'll do the routine and afterwards you may leave. Tumbling is optional during your tryout and the list of who made it will be posted in the cafeteria during lunch tomorrow. Good luck," the head cheerleader, Hayden, spoke and paused for possible questions. After seeing that everyone understood what she'd said, she looked at her clipboard and continued. "Jordan Brown? You're up."
Hayden and Jordan went into the gym together and I nearly fainted. Sure Jordan was first, but what if I was next? A swarm of butterflies flew around in my stomach at the mere thought. What if I didn't make the team? There were about fifty girls trying out and Hayden told us earlier that there were only eight spots available. I prayed quietly that I would fill one of those slots.
Amie and I walked over towards the trophy case and sat, separating ourselves from the crowd of girls. They were all practicing the routine that we'd learned less than an hour ago.
"I don't think I can do this Ames," I told Amie.
"What?" Her neck snapped towards me quicker than I'd expected.
"I'm on my period and I feel like crap," I told her the absolute truth. I had the worst cramps.
She smacked her gums. "Get a Midol out of my bag and stop complaining," she demanded and I did as I was told.
Ugh. So there wasn't a way for me to get out of this.
I knew I had the routine down, but what if I messed up or something? As I thought of the possibility of not making it, I realized how much I actually wanted this. I didn't have any friends but Amie and I didn't have a boyfriend, so I needed to devote my time to something. I would have to give this tryout my all. I was determined to do my best and not let my nerves get the best of me. I mean, it was worth a shot right?
The gym doors opened again, revealing a distraught Jordan. I couldn't believe how much time I'd spent overanalyzing the situation. I didn't even go over the routine once!
"Kylie, they say you're next," she murmured as she passed me.
I looked at Amie, confirming if what I heard was correct and she nodded.
I took a long, deep breath, steadying myself before standing. The girls watched me quietly as I opened the door, and walked into the gym.
There were five judges at the table, all who were on the team the year before. Hayden sat directly in the middle, giving me an encouraging smile.
I gulped before giving the row of judges a smile.
"So Kylie. What grade are you in?" One of the judges, Bianca, asked me.
"I'm a senior this year," I spoke confidently.
"And you want to spend your time on the team? We practice for hours after school," She asked another question.
"Well, yeah. I'm pretty fit, so I don't mind all the practicing," I stated.
"And your grades won't slip? We have to be role models for the student body," Another judge budded in.
"Nope. I've been an all 'A' student since kindergarten," I shot back.
"And what if we need help with fundraisers?" Another asked.
"I have sources," I thought of Ms. Tompkins, "who would be more than happy to donate to the team."
They all relaxed in their chairs and smiled at me.
