Finished cleaning his cuts, I cleaned the blood and dirt off my shirt and wringed it out. Dmitri was hurt after trying to catch me and I bet the original fall wasn't all that nice either.
The cuts and bruises seemed deep, and I already could tell that when he woke he would be in pain. Unfortunately I didn't have bandages. It was my entire fault. I looked down at his peaceful face. Asleep, he seemed less of the perv? Yeah that was the word; A perv that I have come to describe Dmitri. He seemed like a good person at heart but he kept saying things that were... unnecessary. But, he is one perv with beautiful eye- what am I saying!
This was all my fault. I couldn't forget that. If only, if only I was never born. If I wasn't here, Sara would still be home safe, Dmitri and Hera wouldn't have to bother with me, Angelo would find someone better for him and my parents... they wouldn't have left in the first place.
I realized years ago that they probably left, scared of that weird thing I use to be able to do. I use to be able to control my teddy bears. Like telling then to walk, and they would get up and walk. It scared them away. If only... I was never born.
But being born is in the past; I can't erase it or change it. Though there was one thing I could change... What if I wasn't alive? What if I didn't let my heart beat again? Those men in black coats, Shadows, would have to return Sara. They only had her to get me, but if I was dead, they wouldn't need to keep her. Angelo would be happy I was gone, maybe mourn for like a day then fall in love with a much prettier, smarter and better girl for him. Someone he needed.
Suddenly an idea crossed my mind. One that would solve everything. Perfect. All it needed was one sacrifice.
I looked up at the morning sky. The never ending sound of cars still loud but the sound of birds had quieted. A small cool breeze cut through me making me realize I was still in my pj's. The sun would eventually warm me. I stood and looked around the roof. The gravel where we had fallen had drops of red and it traveled to where Dmitri lay now, smudged under him. I had to get him inside. The wind was picking up and the sun had risen enough to cast small shadows.
Placing Dmitri's one arm over my shoulder and my arm over his I stood... lifting him. I half dragged half carried him to the entrance to the building and lay him against the ledge near the door. Now someone would see him when they came up to the roof. I thought about opening the door but noticed the lock. This was for the best; leaving him right here.
I couldn't leave just like this though. If I wasn't ever going return they needed to know not to search for me because I wouldn't be found. Well couldn't; I would be in some other world only found when one’s life has ended. They needed to know I wasn't kidnapped or anything and I left out of my own will. Searching, I found a few grey hard rocks, bigger than most and placed them, creating a trail from Dmitri to the garden. Placing my shirt on the ground I underlined the word- written using a stick in the dirt- 'Dead.'
That made things clear, right? Yeah they would understand and Angelo knew my handwriting. Standing up from my crouch I started to the ledge that Dmitri lay against. Slowly and carefully I placed one foot after another on the ledge, keeping my arms extended at my sides, like an air plane, I stood on top of it. Turning slowly I had my back facing the outside of the roof, the street, and closed my eyes. This was it.
Taking multiple deep breathes a prepared for my fall and whispered a small good bye to life.
"HAYZEL!!!!” someone yelled causing me to open my eyes. Seeing Angelo's worried face here only reminded me that he was worrying for a worthless girl who ruined everything. "Please Hayzel... don't jump," his eye brows jumping closer together. "Don't drop! Suicide is never the answer!"
