6. Newly Sewn

I wiped the tears from my face and stood. Dmitri and Angelo were still in conversation inside the kitchen; a conversation that grew louder and louder by the second. I wonder what on earth they could be talking about.

When I got my footing, after stumbling, I crept closer to the eye watching me through the black slit in the air. This black slit was the same I saw the day Sara was taken so it had to be related. It scanned the room then focused on me again.  The eye seemed familiar; really familiar. It was a big, dark brown eye.  As I approached the eye, it watched my every movement. The eye noticed every clenched fist, every, curly black, loose strand of hair, clearly studying me.

When I was inches from the eye, I reached out. If it was just my imagination I wouldn't be able to touch it, was my logic. I closed my eyes and waited for the dreaded contact with the eye. Maybe I wouldn't feel anything and it would prove I am just going crazy. But my hopes were crushed when I felt a soft, wet and cold surface of a sphere. I opened my eyes and I had touched the eye. I pulled on my hand to draw back, the ice cold feeling I wasn't a fan of spread through me, but my hand wouldn't release. Like I had just touched glue and was now stuck. I tugged on my hand harder again, trying harder and harder every second. I just couldn't get out.

I pulled back as hard as I could one last time and gave up. I sat there, my hand on top of the eye that continued to stare at me, no eye lids for it to blink. Just the big brown eye. I sat on my knees and stared back at it.

I felt a tug and realized too late that the eye was connected by a long red vine, to something on the other side of the black slit in the air. It was connected by a bloody cord. Someone or something was trying to pull the eye back into the dark... along with me.

I struggled again against the pull now, trying to get my hand free but it was useless I was being reeled in. Soon, the tips of my fingers were seconds from entering the black mirror in the air and I started to panic. I put my foot on the eye and pulled back, I yanked on my arm, I tried everything, but I couldn't get my hand free.

The mirror was unbelievably cold, and froze my tips of my fingers with contact. The cold spread over me and slowed my movement. The darkness of the mirror, started to creep up my arm, like it was swallowing it.  I kept pulling on my hand trying to get free even though I knew it wouldn't work. I couldn't think straight as my face zoomed closer and closer with the mirror. What could be on the other side? Soon my entire arm had crossed to the other side and my body was being reeled in head first. I felt like a fish caught on a hook. I fell for it.

Soon my head had entered the black slit but I had kept my eyes shut, afraid of what I might see. The only part left of me in the real world was my legs, my left hand and half my torso. Everything else was freezing cold. I felt the cold like falling into a bed of needles. I felt little points everywhere, one after another, but in my case it was cold. I felt the cold but my body functioned perfectly, like my heart and nerves were frozen but I still felt pain. I moved. I could think normally, with the constant excruciating cold that should have killed me.

If I died would I feel guilt, sadness?

After gathering the courage and my curiosity winning out I opened my eyes. The room I had entered seemed like a prison cell from movies. Concrete walls, a small bed, and a small metal barred window high up on the wall. The window was the only source of light. A dim ray of moonlight streamed in and focused on the end of the bed. On the top of the bed sat a small sillohette of a girl. She was sitting up hugging her knees. It was to dark to see features but I was sure it was a girl. A frail and weak girl whom I was sure I heard a small whimper from.

I searched for something I could identify with my eyes still adjusting, not yet fully capable of seeing, in this dark. I looked to my hand and was surprised it wasn't sheeted in ice. The eye still studied me as well. I let my eyes follow the bloody cord down to its holder. The cord was wound around someone’s arm. An arm that wore a sleeve half way down its forearm showing off its two tattoo’s that lay side by side.  An arm I would recognize anywhere as the arm that held my sister like a rag doll. The kidnapper.

The arm belonged to the silhouette of a man, who, after squinting, wore a long black cloak. His hood was up, hiding his face. He sat in a chair next to the bed and kept on tugging on the cord, coiling it more on his arm, pulling me closer. I could swear I could feel his grinning from where I lay on my stomach, half in and half out of the hole. I pulled back on more time and realized there was one more thing I could do, if my voice was hearable. I breathed in a painful gulp of frozen air and screamed.

The girl on the bed lifted her head that she had buried in her legs, and moved of the bed, wincing with every movement. She left her head fall into the stream of moonlight.

My heart stopped.

The girls black hair was pushed from her face. One big brown eye, identical to my own minus the lack of green, looked up at me. The other eye was covered with a thick white bandage that wrapped around her head and was already crimson red where it covered the eye. The girl’s eye. Sara's eye was my bait, and my hand was stuck to it, being reeled in. I looked at Sara again, blinking, and trying to wake up from this nightmare, but this was real. Sara was crying out blood, streaking her cheeks in place of tears. The bandage began to fall from her face, as Sara unwrapped it slowly.

I felt a warm sence near my side but ignored the arm that reached into the black mirror after me. All I could see was Sara. When the bandage was completely off, I stared at Sara in horror. The place where her eyes should have been was empty. I felt like throwing up only now realizing, that if her eye was on my hand of course its original place would be empty and still spewing blood.

I no longer wanted to escape but now run to my sister. I now had only my shins and feet in my real world that seemed distant at the time. Those seemed fake and too happy.

As if the man had sensed my thoughts somehow, he stopped reeling me in and let me make a decision he was confidant he knew the answer to. He knew alright that I was not going to struggle but run to Sara's side. The man reached into his pocket and pulled out a thin silver needle along with his silky spider web like thread he used before to cocoon Sara in. I stood from his seat and strode next to Sara. Slowly he sat himself down and put his long fingered, black nail polished hands on her cheek, making Sara sob once. He turned her face and brought the needle to her empty eye socket. His tattoo still visible, of the one eye open and one eye sewn shut.

My eyes widened in realization and Sara, closed her one eye awaiting the pain, biting her bottom lip, like she did when she was scared.

That was the last thing I saw of the world behind the black mirror before the arm that slid next to me before brought down a razor sharp colored glass down on the cord, that connected the eye to the man. The cord broke and blood spilled from its two openings like a fountain. The blood hit my cheeks and the arm grabbed the back of my shirt. I felt my legs being grabbed too at the ankles and I was pulled out of that world straight into my own, while still screaming for Sara, whose cries disappeared when the black slit in the air closed and I was sitting on the floor in the living room with the two boys at my side.

Unknowing that this might be the last time I see Sara again.
