Locker room

Platz:

Just PE and then another day of school is over. I grin as I pack my things head towards the locker room. On my way I met Wayne he has the same grin on his face on me. "Also thinking about the weekend?" I ask. He nods. "Yeah, even though it's just thursday." We didn't even plan what we would do but we decided to have fun and forget all the troubles around us for one or two days. We then meet Ben just in front of the locker room and enter it together.

We are one of the last, some of the guys are already heading towards the gym. Our teacher told us that we would play baseball today and everyone has waited for that forw weeks now. Even though we're pretty late Dan enters the room a few minutes after us. By now most of the other guys already left the room. Dan is moving pretty slow and as the others of us have chanced clothes he just has his trousers on. "We're waiting in the gym okay Dan? You know that the teacher doesn't like us to be late!" Dan nods and ties his shoes so we leave him alone.

Just as we enter the gym I remember that I forgot to take my watch of. I like my watch because I have no sense of time so it's pretty useful to me but I don't want to break it. "Guys I'll be right back!" I inform the other two while holding up my watch. Luckily the teacher isn't here yet.. I quickly walk back and enter the locker room. What I see there makes me gasp.

In front of me stands Dan, I can only see his back from here but that's enough. His left side is blue, purple and part of it is grazed. But that's not even the worst part. I can also see various scars and they don't seem like he got them at the same time. His whole back is covered in small and big scars and if you add the bruises on his side you get a scary sight. I guess Dan somehow sensed me because he suddenly turns around and stares at me. I can't do anything but stare back. I'm not able to look at the rest of his body because he covers it with his t-shirt. He quickly puts it on and I can see more scars and bruises on his upper body. The sight just makes me speechles.

"W-where di-did you g-get them?" I finally stutter. Dan just responds with: "I fell down the stairs, I already told you that!" I keeps staring at him. "Please don't lie to me. Yeah you can get such bruises from the stairs but these scars. Dan you can't tell me that that's everything!" He just looks at me and I can tell that his breath is going faster than normal and his hands are slightly shaking. "I-it's nothing!" "DAN!" I rasie my voice but just so that he can hear me. "I care for you because you are my friend. You came back tonight and acted cleary diffenerent and at the same time you got such bruises. In addition to the scars... I can't buy you this story!" He looks down, maybe I convinced him, so I add one last thing: "Please Dan! I care and Ben and Wayne too!"

Suddenly the door swings open. "We do what?" Ben asks. I look at him and then at Wayne who states: "We just wanted to get you because the teacher will be here soon.. Ahm...What exactly happened in here?" I glance at them, then at Dan, then at them again. Dan won't tell them even though it's the best thing he can do. Should I tell them? I look at Dan again who keeps staring at me, not saying a word. He is probably going to hate me but by now I'm sure that something in his life is going wrong and that he needs help.

After I took a deep breath I say: "I'm sorry Dan, you'll problably hate me for that but they can help." I turn around and glance at a worried Wayne and a curious Ben: "I walked in here and saw Dan...."I don't know how to tell them and swallow. "Guys his torso is full of scars and bruises and..." I can't continue, my legs are shaking, I don't even know why and I sit down. Tears are welling up in my eyes as I look at Dan. He doesn't even seem mad. He seems anxious but also a bit reliefed? I don't know.

After a few moments Ben clears his throat. "Platz please calm down okay. I think you did the right thing, if you are right with I guess you think happened..." he looks at Dan. "...then you need help Dan. And if not then everything is alright. That just shows how much you care Platz." He crouches down next to me and lays his arm on my shoulder. "Now calm down and get your breathing right okay?" I nod and after a few moments I am able to stand up again. "Thanks" I whisper and Ben just blinks.

Now Wayne starts talking: "Would you mind showing us your scars? I know it's really personal but if something is going on in your life then we can maybe help." "It's nothing. Really!" Dan protests. "Well when it's nothing then you can just show us, can't you?" Ben states. I glance at Dan. He turns around, his hands on his head as he sits down. I can see his legs trembeling from my position. Then I can see the first tears stream down his face. "Why can't you just leave me alone. I can deal with it, really. Just forget about them please!" he snivels. I walk up to him and sit down next to him. Then I do something I never did for Dan before. I put my arms around his shoulders and give him a tight hug. "Because you are our friend and we care for you!" I whisper.
