Chapter 16

zachs pov 💍

they lost.

i saw jack ran out of the gym so i ran as fast as my legs could take me. i ended up behind him just as he was leaving. 

"jack avery!" he turned around, his tear streaks apparent. "not so fast." he bit his lip and looked at the ground. "you owe me a date." i said, grinning.

he looked up slightly "b-but we d-didn't win." he looked back down.

i walked up to him and grabbed his hands, just as he did to me. "yes you did." he slowly turned his head all the ways towards me and cocked it to the side slightly. "you won me over. and that's enough." 

he smiled is adorable smile at me and i pulled him into a hug. "so where are we going, avery?"

he pulled away and raised his eyebrows, grinning. "i know the perfect place. herron."

he walked me to his car and started driving. i begged him to tell me where we were going, but every time i asked he ignored me and said a random dad joke. i swear i don't know where he learned all of them, but i ended up laughing my ass off and crying from them. he really knows how to cheer me up.

 it reminded me of the first time we ever hung out, when he has laughing at my horrible driving. i was so lost in the memory i barely realized we were downtown. 

he pulled into the parking lot of an old movie theater on a corner. i was confused. "why'd we come all the way out here to go to the movies when there's one like five minutes away from school?"

"there's a surprise after the movie. you'll see." he said before winking and getting out of the car.

he let me pick the movie while he went to get snacks. i picked a quiet place because i didn't know what half the other stuff was. when i met jack he was holding one large drink with two straws and a bunch of boxes of candy. i smiled at him and led him to the theater.

as we walked in, i realized we were the only ones in the theater. which is honestly probably a good thing because we'll probably be screaming and jumping throughout the whole movie.

 it started off with suspenseful music and jack turned around with wide eyes and whisper-shouted "i think this is a good time to tell you i hate scary movies." right then there was a loud jumpscare and he jumped on me and rested his head on my chest. i chuckled. he is the cutest thing ever. i ran my fingers through his curls and we were like that for the rest of the movie.

after the movie was over we both made fun of each other for being so scared and ranted about the ending. we got in the car and he grinned at me before starting the car. "you ready for your surprise?"

"a little scared, but yeah." i said and watched him as he gracefully ran over the curb. 

he made me close my eyes when we were on the street so it didn't "ruin the surprise"

suddenly the car came to a stop and he told me to open my eyes. my jaw dropped and my eyes started watering immediately.

i couldn't believe it.
