She stood behind a building, watching him.

She had learnt through James (who briefly mentioned it when he was talking about one of his conversations with Sirius) that his birthday was that day, which resulted in her appearing at his house late July.

It just so happened that when she arrived, he was just in front of the door, and she had to find a place to hide in a split second, not wanting to ruin the surprise. Fortunately the street had a lot of buildings, providing a hiding spot for the young girl.

She waited until he had gone inside for about 3 minutes, before knocking on the door. A house-elf answered. It didn't look too happy about being disturbed and that she wanted to see his young master in secret, but let her in nonetheless.

To say that Regulus looked surprised at her presence was an understatement. He widened his eyes and she had a hard time persuading him that she was real and she was really there. "What are you doing here?" was all he could splutter out.

She smiled cheekily. "Can't I visit my best friend in the middle of summer?"

"Don't lie to me," he replied, still not over the fact that his friend was here, in his room, right before him. "You wouldn't risk coming here, or even leaving your place, for nothing. You know it's dangerous."

She took his hands with her own and smiled at him. "It's true, I did come to spend time with you. I've been staying at James' ever since I sneaked out of my mistress', and it was easy to get out. I came to give you this," she took out a package from her bag, "and wish you a happy birthday."

He gingerly took the package she offered to him, shocked to the core. Sensing his discomfort, the startled girl pulled the boy into a hug, comforting him as tears fell from his eyes.

He could sense her unspoken question, her fear: are you okay? Did I do something wrong? He smiled despite tears and replied, "I'm fine... I've just never received a gift before."

She relaxed, relieved that she didn't trigger the boy. "I've actually never been given one too. I doubt even Lily knows when my birthday is, which is no surprise... no one actually cares anyway, especially my mistress-" she trailed off, not wanting to cry on her best friend's special day.

He responded by simply hugging her tightly. In that moment no words were needed; they knew what each other was thinking by instinct. All she could do was smile at her friend's comforting and she melted into the hug, savouring the moment of content and joy.
