The sky that day had been nothing but gray since dawn, and even the once beautiful sunrise had been faded. Just like a time-worn painting, the clouds diluted the beams of color that usually radiated blindingly. For most people, it would have meant cancellation of all plans to spend the day inside, staring gloomily as rain slowly dripped down the windows like tears. The absence of light seemed as if it was putting the whole city in a melancholy state. But not Y/N. She was one of the only people found skipping cheerfully down the wet streets, brandishing a small red umbrella as her only protection from the rain. On any other day, she would have happily used the weather as an excuse to sleep in and watch TV, but this particular morning, she had received a particular text that had put a smile on her face that was brighter than any sunny spring day.

Her boyfriend, Shuichi Saihara, had invited her to spend the day at his apartment. Being the shier type, he enjoyed quieter days where he could simply sit and read novels or listen to some calming music. And Y/N knew that whatever they did, despite the weather, they would have fun. That's just how thing were with Shuichi, he could make a simple coffee date or walk with just the two of them a magical experience.

So of course, Y/N had accepted, and while preparing early that morning, had decided to bring an extra something for the detective. It was no secret that Shuichi was fond of classic mystery novels, like Sherlock Holmes or Agatha Christie. She had watched the boy's focused and intense expression as he reviewed that facts of the mystery in his head, and noticed his eyes light up ever-so-slightly when he knew the answer, flecks of light dancing in his golden eyes. Y/N didn't admit it, but those tiny moments of triumph were so cute! Thus, she decided to stop by the bookstore on the way to his apartment, and pick up something for the pair to read together.

That's how she ended up running through the streets while struggling to not slip, barley avoiding being drenched as the downpour intensified. Her lighthearted skipping had turned into a mad dash for the bookstore as the rain got harder and harder, and faint thunderclaps became noticeable in the distance. Thankfully for Y/N, the bookstore was only a few strides away at this point, and she was able to dash through the mahogany door without being soaked. Once safely inside, that fresh, crisp smell of bookstores mixed with the scent of rain calmed her racing heartbeat. She hadn't exactly planned on sprinting there, but the sights of the shop interior made up for it. There was something comforting about being surrounded by thousands of books, and quiet piano music in the background only improved the calming atmosphere. Shuichi would love it here, she thought to herself, heading for the front desk.

Y/N was greeted by the warm smile of a middle-aged cashier with friendly hazel eyes. Put at ease by her welcoming appearance, she inquired, "Excuse me, but do you know where the classic mystery novels are?".

"Looking for a rainy-day read?" replied the woman, smiling knowingly.

"Yes, for....um, me and my boyfriend." Y/N replied, a tiny pink blush spreading across her cheeks.

"I think I know a novel you two will love!" was the response, and the cashier motioned for Y/N to follow her through the maze of shelves.

After following the woman to the back of the store, the pair stopped at a tall shelf crammed with every mystery book you could think of. With so many choices, Y/N was confident she could find something new for her and Shuichi, despite the huge amount of mystery novels he had already read.

While Y/N was lost in studying the names of the mountains of novels before her, the saleswoman piped up, "Is there any authors that you and your boyfriend like in particular?".
